Hello everyone. As Diane said, I 'm taking over the role of list administrator. I've been lurking in the background on this list for several months now. Judging from the number of members and the low message volume, it looks like there are a lot of other lurkers still out there! I have not had a chance to dig into the administrator functions yet and will do that in the next couple of evenings. In the meantime, I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and offer to be of assistance if I can. I can be reached at jjc@bga.com and generally read my mail every evening. Drop me a note if you have any questions and I'll try to do my best to help out. Once I get into the administrator functions, I'll clean up the greeting message for new members and some other stuff like that. But I don't think most of you will know I'm around unless you need me. Most lists I have subscribed to seem to work very well unless someone starts a flame war or wanders grossly off topic for a lengthy period of time. These don't seem to be problems at NY-Military-L, but if they come up, I'll gently try to steer the offenders back on track via private e-mail without making a big deal about it. A word about myself. As my signature line shows, I presently reside in Austin, TX (actually in the Texas hill country west of the city limits). But I grew up in Northern New Jersey in the greater New York City metro area. Most of my genealogy interests involve New York City. My military interests in New York are mostly due to the fact that my great-grandfather served in the 13th NY Independent Battery, Light Artillery, although I am also interested a little in the Spanish-American War and WWI. When I started researching the 13th Battery, I quickly discovered it was not exactly one of the most famous units of the Civil War and information was hard to come by. One thing led to another, and I now maintain a web site about that unit at http://www.realtime.net/~jjc Again, I'm happy to be on board as the administrator and look forward to doing whatever I can to make the NY-Military-L list a better place to exchange information about New York and its military.
