You might want to try a websearch on *Camp* Wadsworth, Spartansburg, *South* Carolina too. In 1917 this was a huge training area. I haven't got the particulars with me, but at least the 27th Division went there for training. Also, if the 51st Pioneers was a pre-Sept/Oct designation, it might have changed when the Guard was 'nationalized'. To illustrate how things changed in 1917; My grandfather joined the 10th NYNG in 1917. At some point he was transferred to the 7th NYNG to fill their ranks before they went to Spartansburg.
