Well the fact is that "SOME" Military Discharge Papers are filed at some County Clerk's Offices, "IF" the veteran filed them as suggested at discharge. I have used them for finding information on modern genealogical research quests at several different county clerks offices in NYS. They are available for public access. The trick is to locate the proper county that they are filed in. It is usually found in the county that the veteran's family lived in at the time of his/her discharge. The form to ask for I believe is DD-214 and bear in mind that the paper might not have been filed for many, many years until the vet got around to it. There was no law that required it, but it was recommended to file it there. A copy of the discharge paper was also sent to the Adjutant General's Office in the veteran's home state. I have not attempted to request any from such an office but I suspect that there is a standard procedure to request a copy. Perhaps someone else may be able to shed some light on this subject.
