After my 18 December posting on recording of my discharge papers with the Westchester County Records I decided to open the safety deposit box and refresh my memory. I found that the papers bore a stamp showing they had been recorded shortly after I was released from active duty in late 1945. Then I noticed they also had a stamp that they been recorded with the Santa Clara (California) County Records in March 1957. This shortly after I had relocated there after being released from active duty during the Korean War era. My discharge papers for the Korean War era also bore a stamp showing they had been recorded at the same time. The 1945 Westchester recording was in response to newspaper articles noting that the county was prepared to record the papers at no charge and that it was a good idea. Copies of the recording could be used for many purposes if the originals were lost. As far as I can remember, the March 1957 recording was to insure that copies were readily available locally if ever needed. Westchester County is a long way from California and getting copies by mail from there might take time when copies might be urgently required. Bill Murray Penn Valley, California
