Hi- Is anyone on this site interested in or have any info on the loyalists during the Revolution. I have 99% patriot ancestors but one ancestor who was a loyalist- he fought in Gen. Delancey's 3rd battalion on Long Island - I am trying to find out whether he was a loyalist or was he actually a British soldier. I am also looking for a great-grandfather who was from New York and was said to have died in the Civil war and if so, he can't be my great-grandfather! Does anyone know about Civil War research in NY? Thanks for any help- the first ancestor was named Thomas Carpenter - he was from Hempstead, Long Island- an ensign; but now I have been told by another source that he was a Sgt. ( who became an ensign) but he came from England. The Civil War ancestor I am researching was Alfred St. John born in NY- and in the 1860 census was living in NYC ( County) with his parents. Annabel Bixby abixby@home.com PS- According to the Carpenter genealogy, Thomas was a descendant of an original Carpenter settler in abt. 1630 in Providence and then one of them bought land from the Indians in Musketo Cove, NY ( now Glencove) and Thomas, a descendant, married Lucretia Quintard in St. Georges Church in 1781 in Hempstead- they went to New Brunswick after the war and then returned by 1798 to Saratoga and then to Lansingburg, NY where they both died - he died in 1831- I have traced back to them and also Lucretia's ancestry- her family were from Stamford, RI ( French Huguenots) but I am having trouble with Thomas Carpenter- I have not had much experience in researching military records- and no experience with the loyalists!
