If he was a Vet, yes he would be entitled to a metal plate with his military data on it. They are usually embedded in the ground if there is no stone to put them on. You also get burial allowance but if he was a Vet, I imagine that was all handled back in 1946. He also might have been Merchant Marine. Too bad the cemetery office thinks its a big joke when you are asking for info on a relative. They should have a record of who he was, and what funeral home handled the case. As a relative you can also request a copy of his death certificate. Call you local VA or American Legion or VFW and I'm sure they have phone numbers for you to start with. ..............Edee << From: Swede1427@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 00:58:33 EDT Subject: Navy question? To: NY-Military-L-request@rootsweb.com Hello Listers, I'm kinda new to this so please bear with me. My question: I went to Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY for the first time to find my grandparents. I have a photo of graves from 1946, it shows a wooden white cross with name : Agnar Johansen and date 1898-1946 above his name appears to be a metal ANCHOR. Now after all this time there is no cross, grave is unmarked. I checked with the office and asked if he could have been a Vet, Navy. The office wasnt to helpful, they said he might have owned a boat LOL........My thoughts are that he might have been in the Navy, maybe WW I . Where I'm going with this is; If he WAS a Vet. would he be intitle to a Headstone ? Also is anyone fimilar with this type of grave marker from that time period???. I would like to get them a head stone but financially its difficult and if hes a Serviceman he should have a marker,, something coming from the VA. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreicated . Thank you-all. Christine Eastman Teaneck, NJ swede1427@aol.com >>
