    1. 7th NY Independent Battery - Civil War

    3. My 2nd gr-gr-grandfather (Charles Augustus Bailey), one of his brothers (Walter Millard Bailey), as well as their father, James, all served in the 7th NY Independent Battery during the CW. This unit was formed in Newburgh, Orange County, and Charles and Walter were in P.C. Regan's company (Company A). The two brothers were at the Battle of Seven Pines, at which event Charles had his lower jaw partially shot off and was saved by his brother, who got him medical attention. (Charles grew a long beard and later married three times. He would tease the grandchildren at the dinner table by pulling the beard back and forth to show them how his face moved around.) Walter deserted in March/April, 1865, but rejoined shortly thereafter. James joined a couple of months before the end of the war. Both were with the unit until May, 1865. Is anyone else researching this unit? I have been unable to find a history of it except for the records contained on the Civil War CD-Rom (including Dyer's Compendium) and various histories of the Battle of Seven Pines.
