Hi List, Can anyone tell me how I can find information on these two men? Gilbert Eddy b.1761 was in the American Rev. War and I think the war of 1812 from NY. The other is Jacob P.( maybe Peter) Deforest also from NY. I know Jacob was in the war of 1812 not sure of about the ARW tho. It is said Gilbert Eddy died in NY and Jacob Eddy died in Iowa after being sent to MO to be an Inspector of the post in St.Louis. Thanks for your help, Helen dschm1939@cdepot.net

The Cornell Making of America site is an ambitious project with a lot of useful books, particularly for Upstate New York. However, they are rather difficult to navigate and slow to download, even on the high-speed Internet access that I have at work. The books below are transcribed in a fully searchable format on "The Civil War CD-ROM" from Guild Press of Indiana (list price about $70). It also includes a few other works like Dyer's "Compendium". Many libraries probably have the CD-ROM, the head librarian of the local library in Brockport NY showed me theirs when I was there recently. The books below are extremely useful historically but very few enlisted men are mentioned by name. For those looking for soldiers in Wayne Co., check "The Military History of Wayne County, New York" by Lewis Clark on the MOA site below. It has a lot of errors but is still very useful. I found two Civil War ancestors and one War of 1812 ancestor in it plus several other relatives. It is also available on microfilm, I first found it in a library in Houston. There is no index. -----Original Message----- From: ~Karen E~ [mailto:KARENE1@webtv.net] Sent: Thursday, October 07, 1999 1:32 PM To: NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Civil War online I saw this on the Broome County list and didn't see this posted on this list. ~~~~~~ Cornell University has put the ENTIRE "War of the Rebellion" on the internet!!! Is anyone familiar with the French Canadian Refugees who were recruited to serve in Hazen's Regiment? Location would be near Rouse's Point, Chazy River, and Lake Champlain.
I have my dad's honorable discharge on onion skin from the Marine Corp. He served two hitches. The first from 1904 to 1908, the second from 1908-1912. I forward a request to National Archives and received a reply the reference branch do not include medical and personnel for the following, and it is check off on their form Quote "Marine Corps enlisted personnel discharged after 1904." Unquote. Where do I go from here, for the service information on the original discharge has gradually over the years became unreadable, and I would like to find out where my dad served during his years in the Marines? Any input would be appreciated.
Hi List, Can anyone tell me anything about Gen/Col James Watson Webb?? He is associated with my ancestry--I've seen two references regarding him--one calls him Colonel the other reference calls him General and referenced the year 1823. Not sure if that is the year he was promoted to General or if it was the year of his birth or death. I've tried looking at my local Alabama library--but they don't have info on this apparant NY General/Colonel. Thankyou Mary

My father just recently told me that my grandfather was in the navy. Supposedly lied about his age to get in. Think it was probably around 1919-1920. Could someone give me an idea of how to go about gathering any information? Who and where would I write to request information? Thanks in advance. Noah was born in Pawling, New York about 1752 and may have been living there during the Revolutionary War. Another possibility is Bennington, VT. If helpful, Noah's father was named Stephen. Noah's family were among the original settlers of New Haven, CT and Milford, CT. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Wendy, would you mind looking up Joshua BABCOCK for me? Have recently found he's in my family tree.....thanks so much Laura Ashlock

My natural father whom i never met was stationed out of New London Connecticut in the Navy during sometime around 1962 and 1963. He would have been in his 20's and he grew up in Rochester NY. I have absolutely no more info on him but wish someone could help me locate him. He and I have never met and my mother has given me only this limited information on him. I know that his father supposedly lived and resided his life in Rochester also and had the same name of Thomas Taylor. I wish I had more info, but i thought maybe someone could help me out..... Thanks. Thomas Peters
