    3. Hi- Is anyone on this site interested in or have any info on the loyalists during the Revolution. I have 99% patriot ancestors but one ancestor who was a loyalist- he fought in Gen. Delancey's 3rd battalion on Long Island - I am trying to find out whether he was a loyalist or was he actually a British soldier. I am also looking for a great-grandfather who was from New York and was said to have died in the Civil war and if so, he can't be my great-grandfather! Does anyone know about Civil War research in NY? Thanks for any help- the first ancestor was named Thomas Carpenter - he was from Hempstead, Long Island- an ensign; but now I have been told by another source that he was a Sgt. ( who became an ensign) but he came from England. The Civil War ancestor I am researching was Alfred St. John born in NY- and in the 1860 census was living in NYC ( County) with his parents. Annabel Bixby abixby@home.com PS- According to the Carpenter genealogy, Thomas was a descendant of an original Carpenter settler in abt. 1630 in Providence and then one of them bought land from the Indians in Musketo Cove, NY ( now Glencove) and Thomas, a descendant, married Lucretia Quintard in St. Georges Church in 1781 in Hempstead- they went to New Brunswick after the war and then returned by 1798 to Saratoga and then to Lansingburg, NY where they both died - he died in 1831- I have traced back to them and also Lucretia's ancestry- her family were from Stamford, RI ( French Huguenots) but I am having trouble with Thomas Carpenter- I have not had much experience in researching military records- and no experience with the loyalists!

    2. Fellow Researchers, My cousin was a merchant seaman during World War II. His ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic and he was lost at sea. I wrote to and received more information than I ever expected from the U.S. Coast Guard dealing with my cousin's service. I started by downloading Standard Form 180 - Request Pertaining To Military Records at website: www.nara.gov/regional/mprsf180.html Addresses for the different branches of service are listed as to where the completed form should be sent. In a round-about way my request ended up at the National Maritime Center, 4200 Wilson Blvd., Suite 510, Arlington, Virginia, 22203-1804. (Not one of the addresses listed on the form). I received 14 pages of photo copies from my cousin's file (some double-sided). I learned that he had a middle name, a social security number and held the rank/title of Deck Cadet. There was also a copy of his father's handwritten approval for him to join the service (he was only 16 3/4 at the time), notarized by another member of the family. A copy of the actual telegram sent to his father informing him of his son's loss at sea. A photograph of the young man attached to his enlistment application. And other papers documenting his short career. He was only 18 3/4 years old when his ship was torpedoed on February 5, 1943 with the loss of all hands. I hope this information is helpful in your searching your family roots. 3. Merchant Marine officers had to be licensed so there might still be records. I would recommend starting by writing to the National Archives and Records Administration to see what records they have: inquire@nara.gov NARA might also have some records on the Joseph Conrad although I doubt that they would list cabin boys. I don't know whether there are any Merchant Marine records comparable to the military service records. He likely belonged to a union for at least part of his career. He may have gotten a pension. I live in TX but don't know much about the local records because none of my ancestors lived here. One reference gives this address for birth and death records: Bureau of Vital Statistics Texas Department of Health 1100 West 49th Street Austin TX 78756 (512) 458-7380 -----Original Message----- From: CChappell@aol.com [mailto:CChappell@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 1999 11:39 PM To: NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Merchant Marine Question Hi List, Can anyone tell me how to get information on someone who was in the Merchant Marine. My grandfather, Charles Magnum BOONE supposedly started his naval career as a cabin boy on the Joseph Conrad when he was 12 or 13 years old. My mother maintained that he lied about his age and signed on. I recall pictures of him as a kid, standing in front of the ship with a goat dressed in a sailor suit. He was then in the Spanish-American war, WWI and WWII. By the mid 1950's he had retired as captain of his own vessel. It is a rather flowery story. How do I corroborate any of this stuff that I recall my mother telling me. I know he died in the City of Galveston, Texas but am unable to unearth any "on line" records of his death. He is also not listed in the SSDI either. My uncle, now deceased, went to Texas to do all the funeral stuff and any information he would have had is lost. Too bad I wasn't interested in this stuff 35 years age. Thanks in advance for the help. Regards, Claudia A. Chappell

    3. My step grandfather Charles Anderson from what my mom said was a very famous Indian fighter and fought in the Indian War. He led the parade ( she lived in Whitestone, L.I. ) every year she said on his horse ( what parade? ). And when he died his horse rode with no rider and his casket was pulled on a caisson. It was all very sad she said. What I can't understand is he was born about 1862 and the height of the Indian Wars was 1869-1878. Wounded Knee was 1890 and called "The last great battle of the Indian Wars ". What was he 16 years old near the end? O.K. about 28 years old by Wounded Knee. I don't know his birth date and war dates don't seem right. Is there any place I could find information on who was in the Indian War? ( Names/List ) thanks June :-)

    1. Military Records in the State Archives
    2. Fellow researchers, Several people have mentioned the National Archives and Records Administration as the place to obtain service records but I have not seen any mention of the information held by the State Archives in Albany. In the early 1920's, the state of New York decided that it wanted to honor its sons who had served in the Great War by publishing a volume of all who had participated in the armed services. To do this, the state went through the military records held by the federal government. (The same records that were destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1973 at the National Archives). The information was put on 4x6 cards but the entire file of each serviceman was not copied. The information contained on these cards include: Surname Christian Name Serial Number Race Residence Enlisted or Inducted (Where and When) Place of Birth Age or Date of Birth Organizations Served In Engagements Wounds or other injuries received in action Served Overseas(Dates) Honorable Discharge(Date) Percent Disabled on date of discharge Remarks Parentheses are mine. The state never published their results BUT these cards are still available through the New York State Archives. If you go to the web site www.sara.nysed.gov/holding/fact/milform.htm you can print a copy of the form to use to order a records search. The more information that you can provide, the more likely they can supply you with a photo copy of the record that you are looking for. The cost of the search and photo copy is $1.00 and if they do not find anything they return your check. Other records that can be ordered off of this research form are: Revolutionary War land grants to Continental Officers and Soldiers ($3) War of 1812 payroll cards and veterans' claims (post-1859) ($3) Civil War abstracts of muster rolls ($3) Spanish-American War summary service cards ($1) I have only had reason to receive the World War I records so I cannot say how useful the records for the other wars are but it's always worth a try.
