    3. Well the fact is that "SOME" Military Discharge Papers are filed at some County Clerk's Offices, "IF" the veteran filed them as suggested at discharge. I have used them for finding information on modern genealogical research quests at several different county clerks offices in NYS. They are available for public access. The trick is to locate the proper county that they are filed in. It is usually found in the county that the veteran's family lived in at the time of his/her discharge. The form to ask for I believe is DD-214 and bear in mind that the paper might not have been filed for many, many years until the vet got around to it. There was no law that required it, but it was recommended to file it there. A copy of the discharge paper was also sent to the Adjutant General's Office in the veteran's home state. I have not attempted to request any from such an office but I suspect that there is a standard procedure to request a copy. Perhaps someone else may be able to shed some light on this subject. 3. The county clerks wouldn't have discharge papers. You didn't say when your uncle was in the military. A large percentage of the WWI and WWII records were destroyed in a fire at the records center but part of the information can be reconstructed from other records. 3. Check with your town clerk also. I live in a small town in Connecticut, where veterans are allowed certain tax waivers if they produce their discharge papers. These papers are all on file and accessible to anyone. Karen Flanders Eddy

    3. Robert's dilemma is a common one and it will get worse as the World War II vets pass away. I urge all of you who have family members that served in the Army and/or Air Force during World War II and thereafter before 1950 to copy all the military records that you can find. Make both paper and computer copies. Scan them into the computer even if they are hard to read. Copy them in JPEG format like you would a photo, do not compress and save them in JPEG format. You will be able to read them with the zoom feature and print them out at their original size. Deposit a copy with the local historical society. Future genealogists will praise your efforts. ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Mahoney <tovert@webtv.net> To: <NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 16, 1999 9:26 AM Subject: DISCHARGE PAPERS > Hi I am > trying to get my uncles discharge papers . 3. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have my gg-grandfathers Civil war discharge paper. It states that Hugh McGuire was a private of 1st Lieut. J ( N )? Sunderland, Company G, 12th Regiment of " Veteran Reserve Corps Volunteers. Enlisted Sept. 3, 1862, ( 21 years old ), discharged, Feb. 15,1865. I've looked around and can't find anything on the 12th Regiment of "Veteran Reserve Corps Volunteers, Company G". Maybe someone knows something about this regiment. Thanks in advance, Carly

    1. WARNER Genesee County "Overseer of the Poor" WARNER (KMO)
    2. Hello All, I am asking for any help anyone can give me regarding the dead-end I have hit regarding my WARNER roots in Genesee County, Michigan. The family I am seeking is that of WASHINGTON WARNER and his wife Mary (unknown maiden name). In the 1860 census, three of their children are shown: GEORGE (1847), LYDIA 1850) and EMORY BRADFORD WARNER ( my great-grandfather) (1852). All three were born in Flushing Township (Genesee County, MI). By 1880, Emory Warner has married CAROLINE PERKINS, whose family hailed from Jefferson County, New York and settled in Hemlock (Saginaw County), MI. Washington WARNER's occupation is listed as a shoemaker, a trade carried on by his sons. The 1860 census records also show that Washington and Mary were born in New York, but the 1880 census shows them being born in Pennsylvania. A book titled "The History of Genesee County" (MI) written around 1890, shows Washington Warner listed under "Overseers of the Poor 1848. There are Warner references in Eaton and Shiawassee Counties, MI. Family lore from my 95 year old cousin says The Warner family in Pennsylvania might have been from the Philadelphia or Pittsburgh areas, with a reference to "Pennsylvania Dutch," which surprised me because I have been told my Warner's emigrated from either England or Ireland. Yes, I'm confused too! Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. Any information will be 100% more than I have right now. Can I sound any more pitifully desperate? 3. The food chain was called Horn and Hardart, their restaurants were called "Automats". They were quite famous in New York City. I never lived there but I did eat in one once in the 1960s. The Automats were all closed some time ago but I think Horn and Hardart still exists.
