Thanks Jim, Appreciate the pat on the head. Always makes you feel nice. You wrote: I would suggest that it might be helpful to have your fields expanded > to somehow stack the Divisions, Regiments, and Companies. [if any > higher designations were static through the war, they should be added > to this 'stacking'] Jim did a nice job of listing the units for you. I would suggest someone find out what the organization was in 1812. Also, was it different in militia and in different states than in federal troops. From my own experience, I would say that the structure has changed so often you can't depend on anything we know today applying in the same manner it was used back then. As to difficulty finding your unit, don't give up yet. Even though the compiled list from the film is completed, it is not a complete listing of units from NY. I know this for a fact, because I have a couple pages from the next series of records ( and remember, I am still on the first few pages of the first of five rolls of film), and on one of those pages I find a document listing this unit, which is not included in the index: Capt. Daniel Blish's Co of Militia detached from the 2 Battalion 9 Regt New York is on the Company Muster Roll of 3 Battalion, Major John Robert's, Aug to Nov 1813. Going back to my document 1 you find Robert's Battn. Then you find an idex card to a muster roll of Field and Staff officers of Robert's Battalion which states that it was a unit under General Hopkin's Brigade. Hopkin's Bde is listed in doc 5. So, there will be more to add later, but it will be slow going. The easy part was the index which I have finished. The hard part is how I am going to do this. Hard copies of everything would run several hundred dollars and I cannot afford that. Don't expect any one else can either. So, does anyone know if you can scan microfilm with an ordinary scanner? My imaging program will convert negative to positive and back. A lot of trouble, but much cheaper. Come on you technogeeks, tell me how to do this. But, keep it simple, I am kinda like those goats that go stiff and fall over when they hear a loud noise. Only I suffer those symptoms when I get a too technical explanation. As to sorting by unit structure, I will leave that to computer gurus. It might be most helpful, because I am seeing many "detached" units attached to other units as in the case of Blish above. Let's see what develops and maybe then someone can figure out just how to set up the fields and come up with some sort of a design for the documents so they can be sorted. It's a bit much for this poor old country girl to "figur" out. By the way, for those of you who find the document structure rather strange, I think I managed to set it up so the gurus can import it into a data base with no, or hopefully little, editing. More later, but at my speed it may take a couple years to get thru those 5 rolls of film. Impatient? Rent em and read em. Marianne

Good morning List, Can anybody tell me where and when the 7th NY Art'y--involved in the War of 1812 was formed?? Or anything about the history of this Regiment? Thanks, Mary
Where can obtain info on WW1 - Marines from New York City Thanks
Yes Fred. I haven't gotten into the film very far yet. But enough to know the next section indexes rolls of Companys, ie., Capt. Septa Fillmore's Co., 3d Battn, NY Detached Militia, Major John Robert's (40th Brigade), Aug to Nov 1813, War of 1812. Number of Names: 106 Records: Company Muster Rolls: Muster Roll of Capt. Septa Fillmores Company of Militia. Detached from the 36th Regiment and 40th Brigade of the State of New York. Rendesvous'd August 17th 1813 <symbol?> Camp Plattsburgh November 18th 1813. Number of rolls: 1 Dates: From: Aug. 17. 1813 To: Nov. 18. 1813 To forstall your next question, "Do the films contain the actual rolls?", I don't know yet. When I get into them more and find out I will spread the word. Hello all, For Eddiejo: Please forward this to the Database CINC. For Ellen: For the information of the W1812-List database guru, I have limited or delimited or done some other fool thing to the fields using commas (at least I think that is what I did). Please tell me, in terms a 3d grader can understand, what I need to do to this document to simplify your putting it into a database. I have lots more to come, so hurry. I have just been working on these microfilms from the LDS Library in Salt Lake. I have not finished yet, but will start this document anyway. This is from a series of microfilms, covering the entire nation. This is for New York with a small conclusion for New Jersey only. (My document 1 of 5 Cataloging New York Military Units in the War of 1812) LDS Film #'s 1715895 thru 1715899. NARA Microcopy No. T-817 Lists of the Adjutant General's Office for Carded Records of Military Organizations: Revolutionary War through Philippine Insurrection "The Ainsworth List" Roll 23 War of 1812 New York (Lists 27-84) LDS Microfilm # 1715895 War of 1812 Catalogue of Indexes Drawer No. 20 My explanation of abbreviations: Battn=Battalion, Regt=Regiment Arty=Artillery Inf=Infantry L. Inf=Light Infantry Mtd=Mounted Cav=Cavalry My comment: The unit names were enclosed with parentheses and some abbreviations contained apostrophes which I eliminated in the interest of saving typing time and archival space. I also rearranged some data fields to facilitate data management. (ie., all listings did not maintain the same order for the fields, I corrected this to allow sorting by fields. mvp Jan 2000). My comment: Guru, do not allow anyone to convince you to move the Commanders' names, which I have listed in the remarks field, into the unit name field. NARA does not put them there and all units are not named, and/or are not named after the current commander, so this would, in some cases, provide misinformation. That can be worse than no information. The fields may require additions, we'll see what I run into. Where a unit was listed as more than one type, I have added alpha subs to the number to allow the double listing for the same unit. I am searching for a muster list for the company under Captain Dubois whose commander was General Schuyler. I found a notice where Andre Elig was a member of Captain Dubois unit and would like to know where they served, what battles, where disbanded - anything at all. Marian
