Allegedly my great great grandfather, Ira Rice, was in the War of 1812. However, I ordered widow pension records and they say one thing. The military record says something else and makes me think there were at least two Ira Rices in the War of 1812. How can I find out where he may have enlisted--New York or Vermont? Reenee
My Great Great Great Grandfather Ira Hamilton was in Capt. Joseph Bencraft's Comapany of Militia, State of New York war of 1812 He enlisted July 1, 1812. I only have and Index record of where he put in a claim for equipment while living in Freehold Penn. Does anyone know where Ira may have enlisted in New York? I am tring to locate a military record that may show more on his enlistment and maybe who his parents were. I have also been having trouble with email so I hope this goes through okay. My provider tested it and it was okay on their end. Sandy Bushaw sandy@valleyint.com
Just found this through Cyndi's List. Thought others might be interested. There's a people locator feature. http://www.militarycity.com/
Start by going to http://www.cyndislist.com and tracing it through the military lists. You can of course obtain their records from NARA. Cyndislist might have regimental histories too once you find them. Her list is a good place to start for just about anything. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <McREsq@aol.com> To: <NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 08, 2000 8:59 PM Subject: [NY-Mil] How do I Start? > I's like to check on service records for Daniel and James Sugrue (or > Shugrue/Sughrue/Shughrue) in the civil war. I have just come into possession of a letter to my grandfather, Richard Folles, from his brother, Frank Folles. Frank was at Camp Hancock (Georgia?) on July 12, 1918. Is there any way I can find out what happened to him from there? I'd appreciate any help anyone can give. I'm at a real dead end with this branch of the family. Frank died bue we don't know where or from what. I understand there was an outbreak of measles and possibly typhus at the camp the summer he was there. Thanks, Ellen Hunter Germantown, TN

I searched my CD-ROM copy of the "Official Records" and found the name Onderdonk as associated not with the 2nd Regiment, but the 1st Regiment Mounted Rifles (Calvary). Don't know how to interpret that; possibly Col Onderdonk had field command of several other units including the 2nd Regiment during some battle. Dyer's Compendium lists the following "2nd Regiments" from NY: 2nd REGIMENT CAVALRY. (HARRIS LIGHT). Org. Aug. 9 to Oct. 8, 1861. 2nd REGIMENT VETERAN CAVALRY. Org. at Saratoga Springs, and mustered in by Co's., Aug. 15 to Dec. 30, 1863. 2nd REGIMENT MOUNTED RIFLES. Org. at Lockport and Buffalo, and mustered in by Co's. Oct. 31, 1863, to Feby. 13, 1864. 2nd REGIMENT PROVISIONAL CAVALRY. Org. June 17, 1865, by consolidation of the 6th and 15th Regts. Cavalry. 2nd REGIMENT HEAVY ARTILLERY. Org. at Staten Island, and mustered in by Co's., Sept. 18 to Dec. 12, 1861. 2nd REGIMENT INFANTRY ("TROY REGIMENT"). Org. at Troy and mustered in May 14, 1861. 2nd REGIMENT STATE MILITIA INFANTRY. One of my ancestors was an ensign in the Army in the War of 1812. Does anyone know the equivalent rank in today's Army? I know that an Ensign is a low-ranking commissioned officer in today's Navy. One source says that my ancestor was drafted and I've never heard of an officer being drafted.
I's like to check on service records for Daniel and James Sugrue (or Shugrue/Sughrue/Shughrue) in the civil war. They were Irish immigrants frm the lower east side of Manhattan, so I *assume* they were in one of the regiments of the Irish Brigade. How do I start on this search. Is there a CD-ROM index or only microfilm indexes somewhere? Are there web-based lists on soldiers in these units? Any ideas would be appreciated. Russ McRory
I have a grandfather who is only listed as being in the 2nd Regiment, Orange, NY under Onderdonk's company. Can anyone help me on this. I don't see a listing for the 2nd Regiment anyplace.

Interesting subject. It is my understanding that most regiments in the French and Indian Wars were local militia types. If they were not would it not have been the British regular Army? Also, did not most of them just serve where needed and pretty close to home due to the difficulty in traveling? Does anyone know a good general history of these battles? ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Phillips" <john.phillips4@virgin.net> To: <NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2000 9:23 AM Subject: [NY-Mil] SERVING OFFICERS IN THE FRENCH INDIAN WAR > Hi all > > An ancestor was a serving officer in the New York Province Regiments from > circa 1754-1762/3 when presumably he would have been 'demobbed'. Hi all An ancestor was a serving officer in the New York Province Regiments from circa 1754-1762/3 when presumably he would have been 'demobbed'. He married in 1759 in New York, and would have then been travelling with his regiment to the various locations in the War. Is there a record of the progress of the War itself which would give likely places where he would have been at any given moment. Would his new wife have travelled with him, or would she have been parked in New York, or Orange County where her parents lived, for the duration. Did these regiments move with a lod of hangers-on and camp followers bringing up the rear? Was it a static war, or a series of skirmishes and guerilla tactics. It's a long time since I read "The Last of the Mohicans" which would, I guess be excellent background material. I would appreciate your thoughts. Hi! My name is Gary James and I am seeking any info I can find on a Hiram/Hirum B. Seamans/Seamons. One account states that his birth was abt. 1847 in NY, but both facts are still unconfirmed. His granddaughter said during an interview that she thought he was from around Elmira, NY, that she thought he was a blacksmith in the Civil War and that he had a brother named William. --- I'm afraid that is about all we know about this man's early life. B. Auten did a look-up for me and found "3-30 Seaman Hiram M 32 b orange widower mechant. - 1865 hurley 26 reg mo. 9 19 61 sgt 2n and lst lt in 39 mon wounded" listed in the "26th REGIMENT INFANTRY.--("2nd ONEIDA REGIMENT.") Organized at Elmira, N.Y., and mustered in May 21, 1861" I am fairly confident this is the person I have been looking for because all the puzzle pieces (with the possible exception of an age calculated upon an indefinite date of birth) seem to fit. At some point in time, obviously after 1865, he, and/or his family, migrated to Iowa, as he married a Katherine Siglin on 18 Apr 1878 in Fayette Co., IA. I make known to this list the desire to know more and make a request for assistance in acquiring the history of the 26th NY Regiment. -- Its battles. Its deployments. Its roster. Etc. Thanks in advance for any assist. Gary James -- Oklahoma pentaby@alltel.net

How would I go about looking for James Sanders who was with Green Mountain Boys/Ethan ALlen? I believe that he is mentioned in the New York State Papers as receiving a grant of land for his service that was in Grande Isle (Two Heroes) in Lake Champlain. But as far as I can tell he never lived there. I have the thought that he went into upstate New York instead. I don't expect you to do the work for me just point me in the right direction. Someone suggested I should even look to see if he ever came from New Jersey (Before the war). Thank you , JES
