Many ask for regimental history of a relatives service. TRY THIS ROUTE; http://cyndislist.com (Put this site on your favorites), GO TO "Military Resources Worldwide", GO TO "U.S. - Civil War ~ War of Southern Independence" OR "U.S. Military" SURF THESE AREAS, YOU SHOULD FIND THE INFORMATION. Has anyone gone this route and > what were their dealings with Veterans hospitals? Bob, If you would like to e-mail or mail me a copy of your letter request to the VA hospital in Batavia, NY. I work in Batavia, not too far from the VA hospital. Sometime after work if I have some extra time, I can make a stop and talk to someone there for you and pass along your letter and let you know what they say. Bill -- William L. If you are a family member and fill out the appropriate request form available from the VA offices you should get better results. dvtassel
Bob, Here in CA I had great luck when I called and the man sent me the information then even sent pictures since mine was buried there in 1916 when he died at the Veterans Home. I was able to even get a death cert. And this was all done by very friendly people there and on one of my lists. So may-be you should try another way as hospitals may be alot differant with giving info out than the Veterans Home even tho they do have a hospital there. Did you try talking to your local VA office for help. Not sure where you live but mine was most helpfull on others, as I thought this man died before 1902 in WA so had not asked about him as he was Civil War. John: I have had occasion to deal with VA hospitals. My GG grandfather was a veteran of the civil war and my GG Grandmother was in the VA Hospital (Veteran's Home) in Retsil, Washington. I contacted them and within a week I had all the papers and files on both of them. Pension, dependants affidavit, witness reports, etc. They were extremely helpful. I guess like anything else it all depends on who you are dealing with and what kind of a mood they are in. Retsil Home in Washington ranks right up near the top with me. My great-grandfather had a Civil War pension when he died in 1934. Most civil war pension files were transferred to the National Archives about 1932 if I recall correctly. Since his file was still active, it remained with the VA and is still in their possession per a records storage agreement they have with the Archives. However, unlike the Archives, their mind set is not focused on old records. They are too busy providing services to the living. It took me quite a while to even get someone there to acknowledge what I was talking about. After two or three letters and about two years, I finally got a copy of the pension file. One approach you might try which may yield faster results is to request the information under the Freedom of Information Act. However, because the death was relatively recent, genealogically speaking, the privacy acts may take precedence. I also would try directing the request to the VA Regional Office for the area which contained the hospital (see http://www.va.gov/ ) . They would have a better understanding of records retention and storage issues. The hospitals almost certainly send the records off to be archived after some number of years and probably don't know what you are talking about. I am seeking info on Simon Lothrop who was listed as an Enlisted Rank in the Albany 8TH Militia in 1779. Simon went to Ontario Co NY, he is listed in the Federal census as being there in 1810. I would appreciate, any and all info. It is believed that Simon was originally from MA, and came to the Saratoga area first. Thank You, I greatly appreciate your assistance, have a good day! BIG CY
Hi Folks, I just want to thank everyone who has e-mailed info on NARA for WWI records. Leslie Albright died at the VA hospital in Batavia, NY in 1978. I sent them a letter (w/SASE) requesting any info on the family or anything else. This was back in 1998. I never received a reply. Has anyone gone this route and what were their dealings with Veterans hospitals? Bob Phillips
Did you send for his pension records from the NARA? You can order forms from their website just go to www.NARA.com and surf around it and you will find them. At present the charge is $10.00 but rumor has it that there will be a price increase in June. Also on Rootsweb there is a CD volunteer look-up. Put it in the search terms and perhaps you may find a cd with something on the war of 1812 and/or pensioners. It's a great site. Good luck, Lydia Granda
Hi, my name is Ken colby46@juno.com I am new to this list. I have a copy of the Indian Mound Cemetery in the town of Moravia, Cayuga County - New York According to this reading of the cemetery by Flora Daniells and Mable L. Crosby through the Owasco Chapter D. A. R - there is a grave- stone for one Wolcott Hinman who was born in 1790 and died June 2, 1872 age 82 years - veteran of the War of 1812. He lived long enough to apply for a pension but I did not found his name in the Federal Pension list. Is there anything or anyway elese that I could found anything elese on his service ? Hi Listers, Today I received a reply from St. Louis National Archives & Records Admin. It was not what I had hoped for. I requested the military records of Leslie S. Albright who died in 1978. He was a WWI veteran. I'm not sure if any of his children are alive as well. The form #13062 needed a release of authorization from the next of kin. Is there any other way this information can be obtained? I'm at a brickwall. Bob Phillips Branchport, NY
FYI I have seen in circulation at the University of Pittsburgh, shelves of Civil War Soldier's Letters & Papers Volumes for many states These are available for retrieval through many libraries via interlibray Loan as you may know. The catalog on their website is called "PittCat" Database: University of Pittsburgh University of Pittsburgh Libraries Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania http://www.pitt.edu/NewPittInfo/libraries.html devt@webtv.net interests: 19th Inf, 3rd NYLA Co C & I Seneca Falls, Elmira
Does anyone know of sources which might have a collection of old reels, and clippings of honors to last surviving civil war vets. (particularly NY/ N.East US) I've seen these once in a while on television.
I am currently attempting to Update the Swartwout Chronicles. I need input from those who have the above family names to jump on board this unique experience. This family has quite the Military History. I would love if you would consider helping us out. I will not take credit for the work. It is your work, therefore you get the credit, I get the dubious job and putting everything in the databank. Would love to hear from anyone with a tale to tell. Kathy kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca
We are looking for information on my great-grandfather who served in Gettysburg during the Civil War. His name is Edward Tucker from Armonk, NY. He was married to Jane Reynolds. He had 4 children that we know of. His son is Alexander Hamilton Tucker, my grandfather. Alexander was born 8/27/1899, another son Ike a daughter Alice V, born in 1882 and another daughter Annie. The info about Gettysburg is unconfirmed. My oldest brother remembered my father talking about going to Gettysbrug with his father and grandfather and his grandfather wept for his lost friends he served with there. Any info you can find will be appreciated. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access!
