    1. [NY-Mil] Re: NY-Military-D Digest V00 #85 W.W. 1 Draft Registration
    2. Ann, you are correct usually the local Town Clerk (Registrar of Vital Statistics) completed what was called a Militia Enrollment list for their town. The information contained included name, dob, address, occupation, age, prior military service and exemptions. The men on the lists enrolled went up to age 45. For W.W. 1 these lists were compiled in June of 1916, a local draft board was also appointed which eventually completed the drafts of men selected for service. Example below; date name address age dob occupation 6/20/16 Doe, John New Windsor 31 11/19/1885 Telegrapher prior service exemption Signal Corps 1911-12 Private -- Glenn Marshall - New Windsor N.Y. I am looking at those for NY- --I have the impression that the forms are completed by local people working as registrars who may know the applicants - do you think the remarks and notations are self-reported or the opinions of the registrar or both? --I have a question re notations and comments if someone is familiar with these forms would you email me or provide address? Thankyou

And this year is a real biggy! It will be held in Geneva, New York. Why is it so important? As of the year 2002 the Swartwout family will have been in North America 350 years. A big head count t the reunion will guarntee us of a place in history, by the Swartwout name getting honourable mention in the Sentate and put into the minutes. 2. Joy Bold
    3. Recently I went to the site of the Andersonville Prison Camp and Nat'l Cemetery in Andersonville, Ga., about 10 miles from Americus, Ga. It was a very interesting and moving experience. In the visitors center, you can watch a short documentary type film about the prison camp during the Civil War. There are also 2 computers where you can enter in names to see if any relatives were imprisoned there. They also have a pretty large collection of all kinds of books, pamphlets, etc., about the Civil War and those connected with it. I bought a CD for $20, "The Prison Camp at Andersonville" interactive CD-ROM. This CD includes the Andersonville POW database. I couldn't decide whether to buy it or a small book with all the names of the men who had been imprisoned or died there, or were exchanged. Individual graves were quite easy to find via a numbering system, but a car is necessary to get from one place to another. It is quite a large cemetery. I also purchased a book about the Cemetery, but I have put it somewhere where I would know where it was if I wanted it. I'm sure you all know what I mean. However, I do have a little brochure, "Visit Andersonville Civil War Village". If you wanted to write for more info, I feel sure if you addressed a letter to Andersonville Nat'l Cem, Andersonville, Ga.,31711, it would get there. Just thought I'd share some of this info with everyone. I have wanted to go there for a long time, it was worth the wait, and the trip. Joy E. 3. Try the library for any good history book on the Civil War or even this particular battle. Also, try http://www.cyndislist.com for references to the battle and histories of the Civil War. You might look for diaries too. Try any of the on line book stores and look at their list of out of print and second hand books as well as their regular list for Civil War books. ----- Original Message ----- From: <VinKnapp@aol.com> To: <NY-Military-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 3:05 PM Subject: [NY-Mil] Re: NY-Military-D Digest V00 #81 > I am researching my gg-grandfather Thomas H.
