My 2nd gr-gr-grandfather (Charles Augustus Bailey), one of his brothers (Walter Millard Bailey), as well as their father, James, all served in the 7th NY Independent Battery during the CW. This unit was formed in Newburgh, Orange County, and Charles and Walter were in P.C. Regan's company (Company A). The two brothers were at the Battle of Seven Pines, at which event Charles had his lower jaw partially shot off and was saved by his brother, who got him medical attention. (Charles grew a long beard and later married three times. He would tease the grandchildren at the dinner table by pulling the beard back and forth to show them how his face moved around.) Walter deserted in March/April, 1865, but rejoined shortly thereafter. James joined a couple of months before the end of the war. Both were with the unit until May, 1865. Is anyone else researching this unit? I have been unable to find a history of it except for the records contained on the Civil War CD-Rom (including Dyer's Compendium) and various histories of the Battle of Seven Pines. An on-line database indicated my ancestor, Zar Gregory of Saranac, Clinton Co., served in Miller's Regement during the War of 1812. Miller's Regemental number has been listed as the 30th and as the 36th. I wrote the the NY State Archives, War Service Records Search request and just received a letter stating that they were unable to find a service record. Does anyone have an idea where I should search next? Zar died in 1857. Please respond directly to me as I only subscribe in the digest mode. Thanks Mary Slack Maynard mmayn93990@aol.com
My ancestor, Chester Andrus/Andrews enlisted in Buffalo, NY (another paper says Brutus(?), Cayuga Co.) on Aug. 29, 1814. He served in the NY Militia in Capt. Alexander Price's Company, Lt. Col. Hopkins Regiment, Gen. Peter B. Porter's Brigade. He was present at the Battle of Fort Erie and was detailed on guard at the time of the battle. He was honorably discharged in Batavia, NY and received two land Warrants; one for 40 acres and one for 120 acres in Erie Co., NY. I am interested in learning more about Capt. Price's Company during the War of 1812. Does anyone have any knowledge of it? Thanks, Alison
The person who gave Military sites: http://www.sara.nysed.gov/holding/fact/mil-fact.htm, and http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/miliante.htm they can't be found, am I doing something wrong? Marie
I knew I shouldn't have deleted my 'message to myself' from a couple yrs ago. Here's a few 'must save' sites; NYS Library Guide to Military records; http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/miliante.htm NYS Archives [SARA] http://www.sara.nysed.gov/ and their military page; http://www.sara.nysed.gov/holding/fact/mil-fact.htm State of New York Division of Military & Naval Affairs Homepage; http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/ [getting a little busy- but be sure to see] http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/mil-hist.html Sue Greenhagen's site- Civil War in NY; http://www.snymor.edu/pages/library/local_history/sites/ Not just NY, but real good for regular Army and includes activated Guard units; http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/ jim
Have you written to the 7th Veteran's association? The Veterans of the Seventh Regiment 643 Park Ave New York, NY 10021-6122 They are still 'a band of brothers'. Even if your ancestor never joined, they might have some pointers to sources for those years. Don't overlook the NY Times. It is indexed for those years & the Seventh was a newsworthy group at any time. & I just checked the USAMHI site http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/aspfiles/UnitHistories.asp & see they have 'updated' their format to a point that, on my system, anyway, it's nearly unreadable. But this one might have something about that timeframe; Todd, Frederick P., & Miller, Kenneth C. _Pro Patria et Gloria: The Illustrated Story of the One Hundred and Fifty Years of the Seventh Regiment of New York_ (107th Infantry Regiment N.Y.N.G.). Hartsdale, NY: Rampart House, 1956. ca 55 p. UA363.2.7th.T6. And don't overlook the State Archives, and the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs for info. Both have been helpful to me in the past-- and your ancestor being an officer should increase your chances for documentation/photos. jim
I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Robert McWilliam. Robert MCWILLIAM was born 13 Sept 1861 and died 5 May 1945 in Garden City Long Island. I have a certificate that identifies him as a First Lieutenant, in the 7th Reg., Infantry, New York National Guard. He received a 10 year award, 4th class award dated 30 Sept 1895 and its' number is #636. I believe the Governor/ commander-in-Chief was Levi P. Morton. I am trying to locate family members and anything about his time in the National Guard, jobs promotions, campaigns fought. I visited the 7th Reg. WEB site but it doesn't tell me much about Roberts time 1885-1895. Thanks in advance for your help. John Townsend McWilliam john.t.mcwilliam@intel.com
I had a question about a family heirloom, a walking cane. It has a solid gold end cap, according to its owner, and 8" below the curved grip is a gold band with the following inscription: BGBB Association 1864-1914 Golden Jubilee The owner say this is a NY item. Anyone know what the "BGBB Assoc." is? -- Sue Greenhagen at SUNY Morrisville greenhsh@morrisville.edu
Are there published rosters of New Yorkers who enlisted in the Regular Army and Militia during the War of 1812? If so, and somebody out there has access, could you see if Spalding Russell, probably of Hoosick, served during the war. Elliott Hoffman Tiverton, RI

How's this for a shotgun approach? Every list I had! Does anyone know of any online obituary/census/ cemetery and genealogy contacts OTHER THAN THE LIBRARY OF MICHIGAN AT SAGINAW (http://www.saginaw.lib.us) and the more popular ones like RootswFHS or FTM? The Saginaw system is great, but it's somewhat limited. I'm sure there are people in every state and Canada who would be interested in finding another source for genealogical research.
