Also like John Carpenter of Jamcia,Queens,NY Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA - Carpenter DNA Project WHO CAN JOIN OR PARTICIPATE IN THE CARPENTER COUSINS Y-DNA TESTING? Since the Y strand on the DNA is contained in males, only male Carpenters can participate. Male Carpenters from the United States of America, England (and the Commonwealth) & France are strongly encouraged to submit their Y-DNA. Some of the Carpenter name variants are: Carpender, Charpentier, Carpentier, Zimmerman. There are many other Carpenter branches of English descent in America, other countries and those still in the United Kingdom. There are many Carpenters of German and Swiss ancestry whose ancestral name of Zimmerman means Carpenter. Many of these line have been misidentified one way or the other. The Y-DNA testing will help sort out these lines. There are three main branches of CARPENTERS in New England (USA) who are believed to be related in England. These represent about 60 to 70 % of the Carpenters surnames in North America. These Branches are: 1) Rehoboth,MA branch. Founder: Captain William Carpenter b. 1605 in England & came to America in 1638. 2) Providence, RI branch. Founder: William Carpenter b. circa 1608/1611 in England & came to America about 1635. 3) Philadelphia, PA branch. Founder: Samuel Carpenter b. 1649 & came to America with his brothers and sister circa 1670. Many of the Carpenters in the Southern States (USA) may be related to these Carpenters from New England or directly from England. Or they may be related to the French or Swiss/German lines. There is much confusion in these lines. It is possible, but far from proven, that the English Carpenter ancestors came from France and are related to the French Carpentier (Charpentier) lines. These include the Carpentier lines that are in Quebec, Canada and other French speaking areas.
