(Please do NOT reply to Nancy. I passed the message along) Hello list, I live in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. We have an area newspaper called the Bay News. I saw this article and thought that someone out there may be interested. Cadet Midshipman Joseph C. DiCicco. MMR, UUSNR, was detatched from the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point NY for training duty aboard the US freighter American Leader, April 13, 1942. On Sept. 10th 1942 his ship was shelled and sunk by the German raider Michel about 800 miles west of the cape of good hope. The body of Cadet DiCicco was located at the scene and under the direction of of the Michel's Captain, Helmuth von Ruckteschell, a formal funeral was conducted for him prior to the burial at sea. This is the first such event that has been recorded in the brilliant history of the Academy's Cadet corps. Cadet DiCicco was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth DiCicco of east 49th street.
