Dear Janet: The original name of Long Island was Nassau Island. The Town of Huntington (as it is known today) is on the North Shore of Long Island in Suffolk County. Yes, there is a strong relationship between Eastern Long Island and New England. It was quite a bit easier and faster to travel via ship/water straight across the Long Island Sound than to travel by coach/horse the length of the island and then by ferry or barge across any of the bodies of water around Long Island. In fact, travel was often easier and faster between one village and another (on Long Island) via water. The New England influence is very apparent in almost every historical aspect from architecture to religion. And, most families will find a relationship to other branches in CT, RI, or MA due to cross-sound marriages or political/economic migration to/from one shore or another. Best regards. Nancy.
