    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] suffolk records
    2. On 11/28/03 (3:04:00 AM MST), ?????? (Johnlsaywhat@aol.com) asked, "My Grand father died in 1966 in lindenhurst, suffolk county in 1966 where can I obtain copy of death cert ?" If the death actually occurred in the Village of Lindenhurst, you'll want to contact the Village Clerk of the Village of Lindenhurst, but if the death occurred in a place with a "Lindenhurst, NY" mailing address not in the Village of Lindenhurst, you'll want to contact the Town Clerk for the Town of Babylon. Village Clerk Village of Lindenhurst Lindenhurst Village Hall 430 South Wellwood Avenue Lindenhurst, NY 11757 Tel: 631/957-7500 Fax: 631/???-???? eMail: info@villageoflindenhurst.com http://www.villageoflindenhurst.com/ Office of the Town Clerk Town of Babylon Babylon Town Hall 200 East Sunrise Highway Lindenhurst, NY 11757 Tel: 631/957-3000 Fax: 631/957-7440 eMail: ????? http://www.babylonli.com/contact/index.cfm The pertinent geography: Lindenhurst is a village (incorporated in 1923) in the southern part of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County. There are 3 villages and 12 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Babylon. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lindenhurst in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; on the east by the Hamlet of West Babylon; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Copiague and the Hamlet of North Amityville. And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Village of Lindenhurst has a different border than does the "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Lindenhurst mailing address and not be in Lindenhurst and a place can have other than a Lindenhurst mailing address and be in Lindenhurst). Those places that have a "Lindenhurst, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Lindenhurst are in the Hamlet of North Lindenhurst; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Lindenhurst with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Lindenhurst (incorporated in 1923) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 18 (map) and 19 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    2. On November 25, 1783, the British Army and Navy evacuated New York, their wartime headquarters and their last military position in the United States during the Revolutionary War. As they sailed away in retreat through the Narrows separating Long Island and Staten Island, the last thing they saw as their ships sunk below the horizon was the Flag of the United States of America flying atop the Liberty Pole (an extended flag pole) in the frontyard of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Hamlet of New Utrecht, Town of New Utrecht, Kings County. Today this is the neighborhood of Bensonhurst in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York City. That Liberty Pole is the last remaining Liberty Pole, and come every Memorial Day Weekend, there is a celebration in the frontyard of the Dutch Reformed Church, now located on 18th Avenue and 84th Street in Bensonhurst. http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/images/Liberty_Pole_34_Stars2.jpg Here's the URL for the Dutch Reformed Church: http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/historic/church.htm

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] marriage application for Far Rockaway 1900
    2. On 11/22/03 (11:30:17 AM MST), Harriet (harcardinal@earthlink.net) asked, "I have been searching for years for a marriage application/license and wonder if anyone can offer any suggestions. The marriage took place in April, 1900, at a Roman Catholic church in Far Rockaway and I have the church record. What I need is the marriage application/license." Where did the bride and groom live prior to their wedding? They may have taken out the license in the county where either of them had been living prior to marriage. The geographic history of Far Rockaway: Circa 1900, Far Rockaway was a neighborhood in the Borough of Queens in NYC. >From 1888 through 1997, Far Rockaway was a village (municipal corporation) in the Town of Hempstead, Queens County. On January 1, 1898, when the western-quarter of the Queens County was annexed by New York City, the Far Rockaway peninsula left the Town of Hempstead and, along with the City of Long Island City and the Towns of Newtown, Flushing and Jamaica became that part of Queens which was now within the jurisdiction of NYC. (A year later, the eastern three-quarters of Queens seceded and became Nassau County.) I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. 3. I have been searching for years for a marriage application/license and wonder if anyone can offer any suggestions. The marriage took place in April, 1900, at a Roman Catholic church in Far Rockaway and I have the church record. What I need is the marriage application/license. I have received negative responses from: Queens, Kew Gardens NYC Municipal Archives on Chambers Street NY State Dept of Health, Albany Hempstead (which covers Nassau County) Queens County Clerk, Sutphin Blvd, Jamaica The envelope I sent to City Clerk, Central Ave., Far Rockaway, was returned as undeliverable - thus never opened. And their phone number of (718)327-7402 is not in service. Is there an address for Far Rockaway City Clerk or any other local place to get a Far Rockaway marriage record? I have searched numerous bride/groom index and certificate films from the LDS, covering all the boroughs. I have reviewed numerous websites, BUT the year 1900 in Far Rockaway seems to fall through the cracks. I contacted an advertising NY researcher who only looked through the same LDS index I told her about. Sure would appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Harriet

It provides an index to certificates by year, borough, groom's surname, and provides date and cert#. The Groom Index cover the years 1898-1937. Whether you can get an actual scan of the certificate I do not know. ~~C~~

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] Augustus LATHAM 1823-1890 Brooklyn
    2. Charles S Latham
    3. Hello Listers, The NYS Death Certificate for my GGF says his parents were John Latham b: Long Island and Mary *Fane Latham b: CT. Other documents state that Augustus was born (04Jul1823) in "Brooklyn". *I originally thought his mother's name was Mary Jane but the other "J's" on the DC are unmistakable but her's looks more like an "F". A marriage record would be helpful but I don't have a date. Nor do I know the church affiliation to look for a birth record, and NYS records aren't old enough. I'm at the proverbial brick wall on this one and I really need some help. Thank you, Chuck Latham Sr Saratoga Co, NY NEADS1@JUNO.COM

    1. Re: [NY-LONGISLAND] Augustus LATHAM 1823-1890 Brooklyn
    2. Cadia Los
    3. Hello, Charles... "Fane" is likely Mary's maiden name since you provide her surname as Latham (her married name). Have you searched the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census for Brooklyn? You should find Augustus listed with his parents and siblings up to a certain point. The 1820 census may reveal John as unmarried or it may reveal siblings older than Augustus. Depending on whether Augustus was a first born son or a later child, you can work backward to determine a 5-year span in which his parents may have married. If he was the youngest child, you may have to go back to the 1810 census to find an unmarried John. If Mary was from Connecticut, there's a good chance the marriage took place there rather than in New York State. Have you located her maiden surname in Connecticut? If you know the area of Brooklyn in which the family lived, you should be able to find out which churches were close by. Knowing the family's nationality will help, too, in determining if the family was Protestant or Catholic. (No guarantees -- one of my GGG's, supposedly English Protestant, is leaning heavily in favor of Irish Catholic!) Although NYS did not require birth certificates prior to 1880, much information can be found in county, town or village records -- including newspapers -- for earlier dates. I'm not sure how far back the Brooklyn Eagle goes, but you may find citations for the Latham family that will yield clues, even if the family lived in Nassau County or elsewhere on Long Island. One of my GG's -- a Congregationalist minister who emigrated from England in 1892 -- surfaced in the Brooklyn Eagle in 1898-1901 as a Presbyterian minister near Hempstead; I'd already figured out he was Presbyterian based on family stories, but I had no idea he was in Hempstead before 1906. Good luck! ~~Cadia

There are 36 hamlets and 22 villages (incorporated municipalities) all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Elmont has a different border than does the "Elmont, NY 11003" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an Elmont mailing address and not be in Elmont and a place can be in Elmont and have other than an Elmont mailing address). ........................................acres ......Hamlet of Elmont.........2,357 ......Elmont, NY 11003........2,791 Thus, a bit more than about 1 in 7 places that have an Elmont mailing address are not in the Hamlet of Elmont (these places are in the Hamlet of Franklin Square). 1. Re: [NY-LONGISLAND] ELMONT, NY - ANTHONY JOHN MOCULSKI - DEATH CERTIFICATE
    2. NLColeman
    3. Elmont is in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, NY. You want to first inquire the Town Clerk of the Town of Hempstead to see if they handle Elmont deaths: http://www.townofhempstead.org/ They most likely do but some villages (depending on where your grandfather actually was pronounced dead by a physician) handle their own vital records (births and deaths only - marriages are handled at the Town level only). The Town of Hempstead has a terrific website and an online form (look under Town Clerk and then Registrar) for vital records. What you will have to do is prove your relationship for this death since it falls within the last 50y privacy protection laws of NY State. If your grandfather's name is the same as yours you may just need to send a photocopy of your driver's license. Call them to find out what they require these days as things have changed considerably (and continue to change as Town Clerks try to deal with the privacy law vs. identity theft issues) in the last few years. One piece of advice: Do not use "Genealogy" as your reason for requesting the record. Sometimes they get sticky about this term. Request the record for "Family Records." Inherited health problems can also be a valid reason for requesting a record but they have stricter requirements for releasing a death record WITH cause of death vs. one without. Give them a call.
