    2. Original draft cards are located in Atlanta --the regional center .Their address is a suburb of Atlanta-- once you know the draft board number you can actually find and see it there. It can be very easy if you know the draft board number. Joy

    3. Recently spent time in FHL in Salt Lake City. Weather in 50's, beautiful views of the mountains. Christmas lights filled Temple Square. Looked at map showing WWI Draft Board numbers. Seemed to me that Far Rockaway, Cedarhurst, Lawrence were all in No. 181 or 184. I also looked through a number of other boards, including those in Nassau. Did not find my ancestor anywhere. Checked the whole listing for the first letter of the surname in case of misfiling. Any other ideas? Did many try to avoid registering? Could he have registered at a board far from where he lived? Thanks! Harriet

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] Queens's County
    2. On 12/11/03 (12:18:15 PM MST), as part of an eMail, Barb Fox (lizbethboz@sedona.net ) asked, "I am curious to know when Queen's county came into existence ... " The year was 1683. Today's Queens County is one-quarter its original size, with the eastern three-quarters of Queens County seceding and forming Nassau County on January 1, 1899. Queens County was one of the original 12 counties created in 1683 when the General Assembly of Freeholders reorganized the governmental structure in all of the province of New York into 12 counties, each of which was sub-divided into towns. (The other original counties were Albany, Cornwall, Dukes, Dutchess, Kings, New York, Orange, Richmond, Suffolk, Ulster and Westchester.) 1683 Queens County created and includes 5 towns: Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, Hempstead and Oyster Bay. 1784 The Town of North Hempstead secedes from the Town of Hempstead and Queens then has 6 towns (Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay). 1813 The Village of Flushing incorporated with the Town of Flushing. 1814 The Village of Jamaica incorporated within the Town of Jamaica. 1839 The Village of Astoria incorporated within the Town of Newtown. 1867 The Village of College Point incorporated within the Town of Flushing. 1868 The Village of Whitestone incorporated with the Town of Flushing. 1870 The City of Long Island City (includes the Village of Astoria and parts or all of adjacent hamlets) seceded from and became independent of the Town of Newtown and Queens County then had 1 city (Long Island City) and 6 towns (Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay). 1886 The Lloyd's Neck peninsula in the Town of Oyster Bay is transferred (excluding riparian rights) to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County. 1888 The Village of Far Rockaway incorporated within the Town of Hempstead. 1894 The Village of Richmond Hill is incorporated within the Town of Jamaica. 1897 The Village of Rockaway Beach is incorporated within the Town of Hempstead. 1898 The western-quarter of Queens County (the City of Long Island City, the Towns of Newtown, Flushing and Jamaica and the Rockaway peninsula of the Town of Hempstead) are annexed by the new New York City. The eastern three-quarters (the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay) remained part of Queens County, but is not part of New York City. Thus, for one year, part of Queens County is in New York City and part is not in New York City. 1899 The eastern three-quarters of Queens County (the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay) seceded from and became independent of Queens County and formed Nassau County. I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Sincerely, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    3. I am researching a piece of information about John Walters who came from England in 1732, bought land with his brothers in Little Neck in 1740 and in 1755 went to war with the French as one of Queen's Counties 38 volunteers. I am curious to know when Queen's county came into existence and when Little Neck was formed. And also what ships might have come to LI in 1732 and where they may have landed. A huge request! I would appreciate any leads or information that anyone can give. Thanks so much Barb Fox --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Kings County has not had any new files for LONG TIME! In fact very rarely does I get any submission for the county. Try the option for statewide instead http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ny/nysearch.htm select "All Counties" 24 refer to 24 files for Kings County alone but no Vogt in any of them. By going "All counties", 9 hits turned up - in Rockland, Niagara, Ulster, Monroe, New York co., Greene, Oneida. More hits will show up as long as there are new submissions to be added to the USGenWeb Archives. It is still going on but I need transcribing volunteers who can read CD scanned images and transcribe in their word processing and submit to me to be added to Archives. The new submission setup is being added to NY Archives county by county time permitting. It is http://www.poppet.org/nyfiles/ This will ensure all files submitted are automatically in plain text. If there is a record you can't fit in through the submission, ask me. 1. [NY-LONGISLAND] New to list
    2. Trisha Fitz Randolph
    3. Hi, I am new to your list and wanted to post the surnames I am working on.I am finding no data on them before 1930 or after. On the 1930 NY Hempstead, Bellmore, LI census I have the following surnames all living in the same home Vincent Bestmann lives at 118 Alder Road. John Bestmann lives at 114. Vincent owns his house, valued at $8,000 and owns a radio. Vincent was married for the first time at the age of 24 and is now 45 and married. Vincent and his parents were born in NY. He is employed as a "chaufeur" in the truck industry and is not a Veteran At least one of his neighbors is a fisherman. His wife Lena Kilian -Hoag was first married at the age of 21 and is now 42. (That dates the first marriage at about 1909 for both-not necessarily to each other.) Lena was born in Germany, as well as her parents and her mother-tongue is German. She reported that she immigrated to the US in 1888, which would make her an infant, and is not a citizen. Madaline Hornung/Horning, 20 b. NY, is a stepdaughter to Vincent. She was first married at the age of 19. Stepsons John, 18 b. NY and Robert, 17 b. NY, are reported as single. Both boys are mechanics in the auto industry. All of the children's parents are listed as: Father b. NY -- Mother b. Germany. No Surname is actually listed for John and Robert and Hornung/Horning is the last surname listed. On other families, instead of ditto marks the census taker marked a squiggled line (~). John and Robert's entries have no such indication leading me to believe that the census taker considered them as Bestmann. Carl Kilian, age 70, is the father-in-law of Vincent, a widower and retired. Could his name be John Carl or Carl John? Carl and his father are reported to have been born in NY and his mother born in Germany. This may have been an error on S. A. Benjamin's part; continuing what he had written for the children. Lena's father, Carl John /John Carl Kilian owned a restaurant/Tavern named Kilian's in Long Island, where her sister, Josephina Kilian (never married) also worked. Sometime in 1950-1960 family story has a member of the family being murdered outside the tavern. Her name was Barbara Hoag ??? not real sure of the last name but am sure of the first. This Kilian/Bestmann/Hornung is a brickwall, I do not live in the State so I am trying to do this online. Thanks, Trisha FitzRandolph

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] (no subject)
    2. Hello everyone, I found this at the bottom of my mail pile and checked the website which was listed in this message. (See bottom of this message.) It sounded like a very good "offer".  I thought many of you might be interested in knowing that the offer is apparently no longer valid. Apparently the site that was listing it did not realize it would be so popular and when it was too popular, pulled it from the site. I checked the Proquest site, after doing a search for "Proquest" and apparently they are not running the free offer on that site. If anyone has additional info about accessing this information, I would like to hear about it. :-) Thanks, Joyce in CA http://www.geocities.com/jarmscoop Researching Edwards, Vail, Mulford, Conklin/g/ck etc., many more in Long Island NY area. In a message dated 11/8/2003 7:12:59 AM Pacific Standard Time, unclefred@att.net writes: Got this on another list, but for all with the Internet, it might be very good, as ProQuest appears from this post, to have scanned in all the old New York Times newspapers, and made the resulting archives a pay service, but are offering it free for the next about a month or so.  If you have NYC or adjacent NJ research, look here.  Also some nearby counties as well most likely. Sorry about all the as, this has passed through several hands before it got to me. >>>| Here is a valuable resource for some things in New Jersey (and New York City).  "The New York Times" is online free until 15 Dec 2003, and then it will be  gone. This isn't just the index, but every page, with most very readable!  You might be able to find NJ information, obituaries, etc. It has the complete New York Times, (including the classified) from 1851-2001   It works like this: First, go to http://riversideregionallibrary.org/ Second, click on "ProQuest Historical New York Times" Third, use the guest password here, which is: welcome Fourth, click on "ProQuest Historical New York Times" again. Fifth, you are now on the search screen -- try Enjoy! ==== NYSUFFOL Mailing List ==== For the Suffolk County GenWeb site, goto: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysuffol/ For PERSI info, goto: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/periodicals/persi/about.htm
