Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn New York is in the process of cataloging Civil War veterans who are buried in the cemetery for a book. If you have a relative who served in the Civil War and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery they would love to get your information. The phone number is 718-786-7300. Cemetery historian Jeff Richman is in charge of the information gathering. Their website is www.green-wood.com. Right now they are only doing Civil War veterans. So if you have information for them please take the time to give it to them. Thanks, Dawn Crowley
In today's (Sunday, January 11, 2004) NEWSDAY, there's an article, "Patriot Graves" that reports that "Starting with his ancestors’ headstones, David Overton, the Brookhaven Town historian continues his quest to replace the weathered markers of Revolutionary War soldiers." "He began an inventory of all the Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the town's more than 100 cemeteries. He identified about 100 graves, most of which needed new stones because the originals were missing, damaged or nearly illegible." As one who has early ancestors buried at Southhold, I'm of the opinion that if these kids enjoy breaking stone, they need to spend some time on a "chain gang" where they could work all day making little stones out of big ones, but chain gangs are no longer politically correct.

And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of Southold has a different border than does the "Southold, NY 11971" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Southold mailing address and not be in Southold and a place can have other than a Southold mailing address and be in Southold). County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

Hello Folks! Hope you all had a great Christmas and will have a happy and healthy New Year. I have posted this before, but it was some time ago and I am sure we have some new members since then. My biggest roadblock, which is keeping this branch of the family stalled in the 5th generation back from me, is in the person of Alexander Hossack/Hussack Brown, my GGG Grandfather. My connection to him is as follows: Me - Kathryn Lee (Wilson) Skarka (mother) - Frances Brown (Albin) Wilson (grandmother) - Charles Albin (great grandfather) - Fannie (Brown) Albin (gg grandmother) - Alexander H. Brown (ggg grandfather) Alexander H. Brown was born in 1816 and died in 1891. He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, LI, NY. He was married to Ruth Ann Pawson. As near as I can determine, Alexander and Ruth had three children, George, Frances (Fanny) and another daughter whose name I can't recall right now for some reason. I have had no luck in finding Alexander's family. For a time, all I knew was that his name was Alexander H. Brown (from his tombstone). He appears in the 1850 census in Southampton Town (not clear on what hamlet, but it might be Westhampton) as Alexander H. Brown. In the 1870 Census he appears in Brookhaven Town, East Moriches also as Alexander H. Brown. For a time I could not find him in the 1860 or 1880 Censuses. Then a friend of mine found where he was listed in the 1860 Census as "Hussac" Brown (wife Ruth..correct children). With this info, I found him in the 1880 Census listed as "Hussack" Brown. I began searching this name and got a hit on an Alexander Hossack in 1790 in New York City. Alexander Hossack was married to Jane Arden. They had a son, Alexander Hossack, who was a doctor who tended Aaron Burr after the famous duel. >From this, I suspect that my ggg grandfather was Alexander Hossack Brown... somehow related to this Hossack family. Perhaps his mother was a Hossack who married a Brown, but I have not been able to find such a couple. Does anyone know of this family or have any suggestions? Gary Skarka
Thank you Walter! I am trying to get back into my search for Great Grandparents -- GROSBOUER. Their son (my grandfather) was born in NY in 1861--according to his death certificate. However, I can find no Grosbouer until 1880 when his mother, Jane Perry Grosbouer is enumerated: a 48 year old widow and servant in a Brooklyn household. Then I lose her again. I think it's because she re-married. Grandfather's obit refers to a half or step-brother named James Coyle. Young Charles Grosbouer (age 19) was enumerated there in 1880. He returned to Brooklyn by 1884 where he married and his first child was born. The Grosbouers returned to the East End--and I think his mother either married in Brooklyn and accompanied them or joined them and married there. There are a lot of Coyles in both places, but the smaller community would be easier to search. As a child we made frequent visits to Greenport where they settled when my Dad and his sibs were high school age. My cousin and I recall parents' conversations about this, but I recall little other than that. She and her parents lived in Greenport and she seems to recall visiting "someone". I admit I've had less trouble searching for relatives in the early 1800s than I have run into with this couple of fairly recent history. Grandfather and grandmother only died in 1930-1932. I appreciate your knowledge of Long Island lore and history. It shows you must love the area--as I do and sometimes I miss it. GROSBOUER/COYLE I have fairly well ascertained this couple did not marry in Brooklyn, though I haven't asked Municipal Records for the search because I have no specific date. I now have a clue that suggests the marriage may have taken place in either Greenport or Orient, Long Island, the county seat of which is Riverhead. Does anyone know if Suffolk County marriage records for late 1880s to early 1900s can be found on a website? And in the off chance that they might have married in Brooklyn before relocating with a step son, is there a site for Kings County marriage records, same period? Thanks. Jan Jan G.
