In particular, there is a ROWLAND, oysterman, in the Patchogue 1868-69 directory. Perhaps, it is a possible relative ? There is a search engine on the site and it yields 14 ROWLAND hits. Not sure if they are relevant to your family or not, but it may be worth a look. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygglshp/ Genealogy Group of Longwood Society for Historic Preservation Karin [email protected]
Hi Long Island Searchers, Looking for the family of Matthias Rowland (sometimes called Matthew), b. ca. Dec 1825, died 1919 in CT, married Ellen Doran in 1850. I believe he moved to CT before 1853, because his known children were born in CT, beginning in that year. He and most of his children were oystermen or in boating-related professions. Other names possibly related to my Matthias might be Warren Rowland or Washington Rowland, but I'm not sure of them. Any assistance would be most welcome! Nan in Ohio
Hi Long Island Searchers, Looking for the Betts family, between about 1780 to 1810, especially Silas Betts, born about 1752. Does anyone know of this family? Nan from Ohio
Looking for any instances of HAYCOOK/HAYCOCK in the Long Island or NY City area, especially before 1840. Possible Morris Haycock (Loyalist, went to New Brunswick CA about 1780); William Haycock; John Haycock (there were more than one - one married Elizabeth CONANT, Trinity Church NYC about 1785), and maybe a Thomas Haycock. As more people sign on and list their interests, I'll pass some more info about other names. Cheers Rich in NH
Hi Beverly, "Hamsted" was most likely the town of Hempstead, which you will find on a map of present day Nassau County. However at that time - Hempstead was part of Queens County. Here is a web site with much Hempstead information - including the complete 1698 census. WELCOME TO THE NASSAU COUNTY HISTORY PAGE! http://users.rootsweb.com/~nassau2/index.htm On this web site you will find the 1868 Long Island Directory, as well as other Long Island Info - Genealogy Group of Longwood Society for Historic Preservation - www.rootsweb.com/~nygglshp Good Hunting, Kathy Then
Friends, Is anyone familiar with Hamstead, LI? I would like to know where it was located in the late 1700's, particularly which county. I am looking for any information on Michael COOPER who apparently was born in Hamstead, LI in 1783. His son Gilbert M Cooper, my great grandfather, was also born in NY and later moved to NJ. Thanks for any clues. Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, MD
