    1. [NY-LongIsland] Offer of Resources
    2. Hello Folks! I am new to this list, but no stranger to LI-Rooters or LI-Memories. I just wanted to offer to do a "few" lookups from the following resources, if anyone is looking for someone that might be in these particular record: 1) "Eastport", by LeRoy Wilcox - this is a short history of the village of Eastport, overlapping both sides of the Brookhaven Town/Southampton Town border in Eastern Suffolk County. It contains a pretty good genealogy of quite a number of residents of that area, including Eastport, Speonk, Manorville, Remsenburg. Many old LI surnames such as Tuttle, Raynor, Brown, Robinson, Albin, Wells, etc. can be found. 2) CD for Irish Passenger Lists, 1846-65 3) CD for German Passenger Lists, 1850-74 Please don't bombard me...but I will be happy to help out with a reasonable number of requests. As for my own needs, I have two key roadblocks in my path to documenting my lines. 1) Can't seem to get back any earlier in my Albin line than James Albin, b. ca. 1809-14 (depending on which census you read), married to Mary Carter, lived in Manorville, had five sons: James Elbert, Solomon, Robert S., John C. and Lewis M. I can trace his wife Mary back alot earlier than this through the well- documented Carter and Garrigus lines. But I'm stuck on James; 2) James Albin's son Lewis married Fanny Brown. Fanny's father was Alexander H. Brown, b. 20 Oct 1816, d. 7 Oct 1895, m. Ruth Ann Pawson. This family lived in the Eastport/East Moriches area. I have not been able to find Alexander Brown in any of the Brown genealogies so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Gary W. Skarka

    1. Re: [NY-LongIsland] Offer of Resources
    2. I don't know very much about my late grandfather. He lived in Albany, NY, and died on November 5, 1970. His small obituary from the newspaper says his interment will be held in Long Island, NY. His name was William J. Lanahan. Does anyone have any information that might lead me to more facts about him and/or his family? thanks.

    2. Dennis Hogan
    3. Hi List Members I recently joined the list and posted my interests, but I haven't seen it, so I thought I should post again. My 6xg. grandfather Benjamin WIGGINS was born in 1702. (I think his father may have also been a Benjamin.) He died on 17 Sept 1776 in Jamaica, Long Island, New York, and was buried in Grace Church Cemetery. He married Rachael __. Their children were - Stephen b. 20 Feb 1725, Jamaica, LI; d. 1782 New Britten, NY Elizabeth b. 3 Mar 1727, Jamaica, LI Charity b. 17 July 1730, Jamaica, LI Jacob b. ?, Newburg, NY John b. 1753, Newburg, NY; d. 1815 Benjamin b. ?, Newburg, NY Samuel b. 1785, Newburg, NY; d. 1821 Stephen married Elizabeth FOWLER, daughter of Samuel FOWLER and Abigail DRAKE. Their children were Charlotte, Daniel, Isabella, Jacob F, John, Samuel and Stephen. They were Loyalists and fled to Saint John, New Brunswick. Samuel married Margaret LESTER, daughter of Mordecai LESTER, who had died in New York. His widow and children had fled to NB. Their children were Stephen, Charles, Gilbert Lester, Susan, Charlotte, Ann, Hannah and Richard. Stephen married Frances Ann PETERS on 26 Sept 1811 in Saint John, NB. Frances Ann was the daughter of Thomas Horsefield PETERS and Susannah Palmer. Thomas PETERS was also a Loyalist, and was born c 1749 on Long Island, NY. He was apparently taken prisoner in May 1776 and confined in Fort Montgomery. He was released and then again taken prisoner and confined at Philadelphia. He escaped and reached the British lines in New York in Feb 1777. Thomas H PETERS was the son of Samuel PETERS and Mary CARLE. If anyone has any information to help me fill in my huge gaps, or even better, if anyone is related to me, I would love to hear from them. Thanks Sue Hogan Duri, NSW, Australia

    2. Thomas J. Schmidt
    3. Hi all. Just signed up on this list though I've been a member of a number of lists (and moderate one) I felt the time is right to finally join this on. I'm a LI'er for over 30 years and live in Manorville, in Suffolk County. I work for the LIRR as an engineer and am interested in LI & LIRR history. Anyway, 99% of all my family lines lived in Brooklyn or NYC. Most of this research is almost done and many lines are done back in the 'old country' to the 1600's. Now I am turning my attention to my more resent roots, ie: 20th century. This is the time many of my 'cousins' migrated to the suburbs of Nassau and Suffolk Co.s. If hope no-one minds if I throw out some surnames I'm looking for in Nassau and Suffolk beginning in the early 1900's up to present day. If you have any of these surnames in your tree, please let me know: KNAUF, WITTEKIND, SCHMIDT, JUNGHANS, PARTRIDGE, WOOLEY, POETSCH, TIERNEY, RYAN, MORAN, KYM, FASIG, SENGSTAKEN, BARBER, BARNES (not the E. Hampton ones), WEBER, BOGEL. Thanks. Tom Schmidt

    1. [NY-LongIsland] HEWLETT/BAKER families on Long Island
    2. I am searching for these people: Hannah HEWLETT Brearley, b. January 10, 1787, was the daughter of Emery Hewlett and Mary Baker. The Bakers and Hewletts were from Long Island, New York. Joseph Brearley (her son) heard his mother tell of cooking clams in the sands on the seacoast when she was a girl. When a young woman, Hannah's family moved from Long Island to Lansing to Genoa near the east shore of Cayuga Lake. Soon after the War of 1812 with her father and his family, Hannah moved to Wayne Co. 3 miles N.W. of Lyons village (then quite a new country). (These notes were compiled by Lina Brearley Richardson from genealogical records made by her grandfather, Joseph Brearley.) Correspondence with John Hewlett, Sr. I am John A. Hewlett from South Setauket, L.I., NY. I have some information for you. Hannah was (probably the 2nd) one of 9 children of Emery Hewlett b. 8/25/1754 who moved to Cayuga Co. upstate NY. He married Mary Ann (Molly) Baker, daughter of Samuel Baker 1732-1781 m. 1758 Mary Ann Palmer 1739-1809. I have never had even the names of any except their 4th child Samuel 1791-1875, so I was thrilled to see your posting. Do you have any information at all on Hannah's siblings? Emery was the 3rd of 4 children of George Hewlett who lived probably at Great Neck L.I.,d. 1778 and his wife Hannah Emory. (Ihave no explanation for the difference in spelling) George was the first child of George Hewlett c.1682-1770 and Hannah Smith. George was the first child of George Hewlett 1634-1722 who married 5/14/1680 at Gravesend, L.I. Mary Bayles 1654-1733. It is believed that George was the youngest of 4 children of Louis Hulet and ___ Marwyn of Buckinghamshire, England. I would appreciate any Hewlett info yopu can supply and any sources to which you can point me. John Are there any other folks on this list related to these families? If so, what are your sources for information? Jim Otton Lakewood , Colorado

I do know that have deeds & lands records there - I would imagine that they would cover the whole of Suffolk County. HOWEVER - the Suffolk County Archivist will be giving a leture on the "Holdings of the Suffolk County Center" on October 21 at the Suffolk County Historical in Riverhead. 3. Kathy, re:""Hamsted" was most likely the town of Hempstead, which you will find on a map of present day Nassau County. However at that time - Hempstead waspart of Queens County....." I agree. I think Hamstead is most likely Hempstead, or at least I haven't found a good alternative yet. The original reference came from a 1920's genealogical column in the Boston evening transcript. The column also stated that Michael Cooper's wife, Elizabeth Straut (or S. Traut) was born near New Amsterdam in 1786. An idea on the location of that one? Thanks too for the Nassau URL's. The information is very interesting. Beverly Fearn Porter, Columbia, Maryland.
