    2. Hi Paula, I found this on film at the FHC, so I made a copy to post to the list. It is in the Village of Amityville, and was transcribed by Mr. William A Eardeley in 1913. The one on Deer Park Avenue is in the Village of Babylon. <<Ketcham Cemetery, Village of Amityville, Town of Babylon, County of Suffolk, Long Island, New York. 1851-1872, 7 stones in a wretched, neglected condition: Bodies being moved: not visible from the main road, but near a side road: copied Thursday 8 of May, 1913 by William A Eardeley, MA, Post Office Box 91, Brooklyn, New York. Assisted by Mr. Frank E Rapp of New York.>> I could look for phone numbers for the one in Babylon if you wish....it's a shame that the stones can't be protected... Tom

    2. Are you referring to the old Babylon Cemetery on Deer Park Ave., just north of Park Ave.? When was it written that some headstones were in bad condition? I was sorry to see that my great great grandfather's grave stone was knocked over and broken. How does one take care of that problem from half a continent away?? Paula in Texas

    2. someone was looking for Baker ancestors a while back here is some from Port Washington area in Nassau County . Check the Family Tree Maker home pages for more Descendants of William Baker Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 BAKER1. He married LOUISE SCHMIDT. More About WILLIAM BAKER: Naturalization: oysterman Child of WILLIAM BAKER and LOUISE SCHMIDT is: 2. i. WILLIAM EDWARD2 BAKER, b. January 16, 1906, Port Washington,L.I.,N.Y.; d. March 02, 1989, Port Washington,L.I.,N.Y.. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM EDWARD2 BAKER (WILLIAM1)2,3 was born January 16, 1906 in Port Washington,L.I.,N.Y., and died March 02, 1989 in Port Washington,L.I.,N.Y.. He married AUDREY VENICE CARPENTER August 02, 1941 in Port Washington,L.I.,N.Y., daughter of WILLIAM CARPENTER and EVA SMITH. She died January 02, 1980. Notes for WILLIAM EDWARD BAKER: aunt Elsie married William Edward Baker A prominent Funeral Director in Port Washington As a young man William Edward Baker, Ed as everybody called him, did chores and maintenance work for Elsie Carpenter Mackey around the estate property located at 231 Main Street in Port Washington Long Island New York after the death of Mrs. Mackey's husband John D.C. Mackey around 1928. It was while working in this capacity that he met Mrs. Mackey's niece Audrey, who was raised by Mrs. Mackey. They were married on August 2, 1941 and had four children. Mr. Baker seeking employment in the depression years found work with a local undertaker in the funeral business and went on to become a prominent funeral director in Port Washington. The Mackey Estate house was his place of business until his retirement. The Victorian Estate house, built in 1878 was his pride and joy, completely restored by Mr. Baker to its original splendor the building was a showpiece in the old part of town. Mr. Baker was a member of the Port Washington Fire Departments Protection Engine Company #1 for 49 years, the same Fire Company his wife's Grandfather, Eugene Edward Carpenter helped to organize in 1892 and was a charter member of. To Don Jordan at family estate Port Washington Children; Paul . Still a further attraction at 231 Main Street was Elsie Mackey's niece, Audrey Carpenter, who had been sent to live with "Aunt Elsie" when she was ten years old. It was the custom of the day for large families to share their wealth of children with relatives who had few or none. For the William Henry Carpenters, who had ten children, and William's only sister, Elsie Carpenter Mackey, who had none, the arrangement was felicitous. Audrey Carpenter became a welcome addition to the John D. C. Mackey family and remained with them until she married 15 years later. ~ Since Edward Baker was ten years older than Audrey, it is highly probable that he watched her grow up at the Mackey's. We know for a fact that when Audrey was in her 20's, the two began to date. Then, one night as he was leaving her at the Mackey home, he proposed with "Don't you think it's about time we got out of here?" Audrey apparently thought that it was. They were married on August 2, 1941. Two years earlier, in 1939, Edward Baker had completed his studies at Renouard's School and passed the New York State test to become a licensed embalmer. However, the intervention of World War Il caused him to change his plans ~ ~ More About WILLIAM EDWARD BAKER: Occupation: Funeral Director in Port Washington,LI, NY Notes for AUDREY VENICE CARPENTER: Here is where I fit in this picture.I will list my ancestors as they relate to me on my mothers side, her name was; Audrey Vernice Carpenter, she had 3 brothers and 3 sisters Audrey was raised by her aunt Elsie and married William Edward Baker A prominent Funeral Director in Port Washington Eugene Carpenter Jr., her father Eugene Edward, her Grandfather James Smith Carpenter, gr. 2. On 10/18/03 (8:44:02 AM MDT), Bill Chamberlain (wchamber@suffolk.lib.ny.us) wrote, "The Genealogy Workshop of the Huntington Historical Society, Huntington, L.I., will meet Wednesday, 22 October 2003 in the barn at the Conklin House, 7:00 pm refreshments, 7:30 pm lecture. James E. Haas, author of the book "The Gunner at His Peace", will discuss the methods he used in researching the records of Civil War soldiers and sailors from College Point, NY." For those that might not know where is "College Point, NY", currently it is a neighborhood in the north-central part of the Borough/County of Queens in NYC. For a neighborhood map of Queens: http://www.queenslibrary.org/gallery/past_exhibits/burgh/map.htm Circa Civil War times, College Point was a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the Town of Flushing in Queens County. Queens County was then 4 times as large as it is now, including all of Nassau County (seceded in 1899) and a small part of Suffolk County (Lloyd Neck peninsula in the Town of Oyster Bay was transferred to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County in 1886). >From 1867 to 1898, College Point was a village (municipal corporation) in the Town of Flushing in Queens County. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Walter Greenspan

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] EDWARDS; "EAST HAMPTON HISTORY"
    2. Hello Researchers, >From the book, "Southfork: Land and People of East Hampton, by Everett Rattray I have reworded this slightly from the book. At the moment, I have not connected this Joshua Edwards to the Edwards that my family connects to, in LI; but am sure it is only a matter of time. Joshua Edwards slipped his gold into his boots as the Confederate raider "Shenandoah" pursued the whaler "Jereh Perry" in the Bering Strait in 1865. The war was over; but neither the whalers nor the Confederates knew it. The "Perry" escaped and the gold helped put David (third son of Joshua Edwards) through medical school decades later. I borrowed this book through inter-library loan recently and it has since been returned. Joyce in CA http://www.geocities.com/jarmscoop

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] VAIL, GARDINER, SACHEM
    2. Everette T. Rattray "South Fork, The Land and People of East Long Island" This is a story that I found about the Vail family in the above mentioned book. The first paragraph is quoted and spelled exactly as the book has it. I have tried to write the rest of it in my own words, report fashion. "The "great Cannow" over which "Waindanch SACHEM of Meantaquit," Lion GARDINER's great friend, sued one Jeremy VAILE in 1658 must have been such a one. (speaking about log canoes that are similar in hull conformation to a whaleboat.) According to a depositition in the East Hampton Town Records, GARDINER "heard" that the canoe was coming to his island, where he had lived since before there was an East Hampton, called for "them that were in the house to follow me and I mett my sonn and good man VAILE coming up and I asked them whie they pulled not up the Canow and they said it was time enough and I called them to goe to gett it up and we all went & could doe nothing and then we went agen & she was full." The canoe had filled, something that can happen to any boat left on a leeshore when the water is choppy. It had been damaged. It was mended by putting two pieces at "the end of her" The court found for Wyandanch ( "ared man"), and awarded him ten shillings plus court costs of one pound, one shilling. The author suspects that the reason Sachem and his men had not pulled up their canoe, was that it had drifted over unoccupied, cast loose through carelessness or "evil design." The author figures that young David GARDINER, who twenty-two years earlier had been the first European child born in Connecticut, no doubt got a parade-ground tongue -lashing from the old soldier, Lion (GARDINER), whom the youth and the man could never please. It was certainly one of the few instances in which a red man went to a white man's court and got satisfaction. There are stories about the Whalers, of which the Vails apparently were apart of, but this seems to be the only mention of a Vail, by any spelling. Joyce in CA http://www.geocities.com/jarmscoop

    1. [NY-LONGISLAND] VAIL
    2. Hello Researchers, Another line that I am interested in, is the VAIL line which is found in Southold, and Long Island area. I am most interested in the Jeremiah VAIL 1618 line, which relates down the line with my husband's McKUNE line, as well as a CONKLING line which we both relate to. I also have a VAIL line going which relates to a friend's Kansas VAIL's. I have been trying to connect my friend's Kansas VAILS to the NY VAILs for the last couple years. Runa VAIL was apparently B.abt. 1855 in OHIO, according to the Census information. Always happy to share information. Joyce in CA http://www.geocities.com/jarmscoop

    2. Hello Researchers, I have recently begun researching the Suffolk Co. area, especially the Long Island connections, which expand to CT and Mass. in earnest.  My surnames are BRUNS, EDWARDS, O'NEIL, CONKLING, MULFORD, DOWNS, FOSTER , and many more. I am trying to find cemetery verification of the burial of any of my family, for the Trinity Church in NYC Cemetery, and/or the Southampton L.I. Cemetery. Any suggestions? I am always happy to share information. My grandmother was Bertha Edwards, who you will see in this lineage.
