Hi Paula, How are you? Did I ever get back to you about this. One of the things that I dislike about the mail program on aol is that it does not note when we have responded to an e-mail. All it does is allow us to keep it as new or save it somewhere. Sometimes I respond and then don't recall why it is saved. I do show Rebecca and Thomas Brush in my files. At the moment I do not have children for them, but have some backline input. It is not showing relationship to the Ananias Conkling line, which as far as I know is the one that both my Husband's Mckune lines and my Edwards lines connect to. Do you know if there is a connection? I may just not have entered enough information or else need to merge a duplicate somewhere. Thanks for any help. Joyce in CA http://www.geocities.com/jarmscoop My Edwards line appears on the Familytreemaker site which is linked on the site above. On 11/15/03 (7:31:24 AM MST), as part of an eMail, Janet (Wstjs@aol.com) asked, "I am new to this mail list, in fact I am new to any research in NY. I am looking for a John Adams who was living on Nassau Island in probably the late 1700's. I have not been able to locate Nassau Island from the maps I have but suspect it has been renamed as I do find a small island off the coast of L.I. near Huntingdon." All of Long Island -- from Kings County on the west to Suffolk County on the east and Queens County in-between -- was called Nassau Island prior to it being called Long Island. >From 1683 to 1899, Long Island consisted of 3 counties (from west to east): Kings, Queens and Suffolk. In 1899, the eastern three-quarters of Queens (the part that had not become part of New York City in 1898) seceded and became Nassau County. >From 1683 to 1691, Dukes County was one of the original 12 counties in New York and was considered part of the Long Island area. Dukes County included Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket Island and several smaller adjacent islands. Today, Dukes is Dukes County County (yup, due to a typo in a 1695 Legislative Act it's a county called "Dukes County") in Massachusetts. Janet (Wstjs@aol.com) also asked, "I believe this John Adams ties into my Adams in Mass. and later Conn. I have a John Adams m. to Sarah Green in 1716 New London, CT. by a minister who I suspect is his nephew. I am trying to confirm John Adams and Sarah Green as the uncle of this minister." Just 5 miles offshore from New London, CT is the island Hamlet of Fishers Island in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York State. Fishers Island is closer to New London than it is to the Hamlet of Orient in the Town of Southold, the most eastern community on the North Fork of Long Island, and this is why Fishers Island while it certainly is part of New York State, has a Connecticut ZIP Code. If you or I want to write to a person or company located on Fishers Island, the last line of the mailing address -- it's postal "city" -- is Fishers Island, CT 06390. Mail to and from Fishers Island is handled within a facility in the New London, CT Post Office. The manager of the New London-Fishers Island ferry lives in New London and on his way to work on Fishers Island picks up the mail bag with the incoming mail at the New London Post Office and in the evening, when he returns to New London, drops off a bag of outgoing mail. Today, Long Island, more often than not, means the part of Long Island that is not within the jurisdiction of New York City, i.e., Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The geography of Long Island can be quite confusing, even to current residents, let alone to those who live in other parts of the country and have never been to the area. Thus, the following ... For a good town-by-town map showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns, read on: Each year, LIPA, as successor to LILCO, publishes a report (the report is published by LIPA, but is written by KeySpan, previously known as LILCO) updating the census population numbers (by using people-per-electric meter ratios) for all the 293 communities on Long Island. There are 2 cities and 13 towns (as well as 2 Indian reservations) in the bi-counties and the 13 towns (3 in Nassau and 10 in Suffolk) are further sub-divided into 95 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 196 hamlets (unincorporated areas), yielding 293 communities (2 + 95 + 196 = 293). ..............Nassau......Suffolk........Total ....cities............2..........0..............2 ...villages.........64.........31.............95 .hamlets..........70........126............196 .....total.........136........157............293 The heart of this 40-page report are maps of each of the 13 towns (3 in Nassau, 10 in Suffolk), showing the true borders of all villages and hamlets (not the postal zone borders) in each town. The facing pages list which communities are villages or hamlets and their populations. (You'll find villages and hamlets that you never knew existed because they are in some other community-named postal zone.) I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone. I consider this the best resource available in understanding the geography and governmental organization of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. You can download a copy of the 2002 LI Population Survey by going to (copy and paste the entire URL, beginning with "http" and ending with "html"): http://www.lipower.org/company/pubs/popsurvey.html If you will be so kind, please let me know what you think of this report after you have downloaded it. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Sincerely, Walter Greenspan . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

Dear Janet: The original name of Long Island was Nassau Island. The Town of Huntington (as it is known today) is on the North Shore of Long Island in Suffolk County. Yes, there is a strong relationship between Eastern Long Island and New England. It was quite a bit easier and faster to travel via ship/water straight across the Long Island Sound than to travel by coach/horse the length of the island and then by ferry or barge across any of the bodies of water around Long Island. In fact, travel was often easier and faster between one village and another (on Long Island) via water. The New England influence is very apparent in almost every historical aspect from architecture to religion. And, most families will find a relationship to other branches in CT, RI, or MA due to cross-sound marriages or political/economic migration to/from one shore or another. Best regards. Nancy. Hello, I am new to this mail list, in fact I am new to any research in NY. I am looking for a John Adams who was living on Nassau Island in probably the late 1700's. I have not been able to locate Nassau Island from the maps I have but suspect it has been renamed as I do find a small island off the coast of L.I. near Huntingdon. Would appreciate it if anyone could verify this information for me. I believe this John Adams ties into my Adams in Mass. and later Conn. I have a John Adams m. to Sarah Green in 1716 New London, CT. by a minister who I suspect is his nephew. I am trying to confirm John Adams and Sarah Green as the uncle of this minister. Thank you Janet

Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. My recent posting updates to the Data Base has taken it to over 26,500 Ancestors who have descendants living today. I have also added several National Societies who have proven many of these Ancestors. Also at this time a few new respected Reference works that contain thousands of sources including some of the early colonists who have Royal Blood lines. All the entries are coded to indicate to which reference work or which National Society has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. When you enter the 1600s Ancestor Data Base be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page" Here you will find the codes and references listed and how to use them. This is must reading to understand the Data Base. We are constantly updating the Data Base with additional Ancestors added as time permits. You will find the 1600s Ancestor Data Base at: http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ Everyone has FREE access to all our web site and the reports contained there. Enjoy and Happy Hunting Ryan Jackson Data Base Manager America's First Families

Folks: Just wanted to provide you with the following link to the 1930 Census info for Eastport and part of East Moriches. Bob Brown and I have been working with Rootweb on this. Hi Gang, What I have found out, is that most of the genealogies from Long Island, was information that I have been finding on the Brooklyn Eagle site. Not any proof like birth/death/marriage or even church records, so I have learned to take these with a grain of salt. Marriage and Death notices are a great resource, but the Brooklyn paper started in 1840 sometime. My Mother's family started here on Long Island in the late 1630's, and I have been going by town records. Wish I could get to the 1800's with my Father's! <g> He is my BIG brick wall in Albany. Anyway, I will list a few families here, and you keep them for future use, and if you do make the connection, I can send along more. Hi Terre, How are you? Thanks for your response. I have a couple messages in my mailbox from you. I believe that the Howell History is also on the longislandgenealogy.com site that I have been studying. I can't recall if I have looked for "Foster" surname there yet...:-) My Foster family is after 1900 and I am looking to connect them to the Fosters who were in L.I. area in earlier days. I have been able to find a bunch of Edwards etc. information in various places. Here is an example of my problem with Foster information or lack of it. I have Lydia Foster m. Abraham Edwards abt. 1819. He was b. Aug. 30, 1795 d. 1856 LI area. Abraham was son of Mercy Van Scoy and John Edwards according to my information. I have Hannah W. Foster m. George W. Edwards. He was b. 1858 and was son of Joseph and Elizabeth O'Neil Edwards. I have this Joseph's (above)granddaughter marrying James Foster, Jr. (after 1900)and the downline to that as well. I have many Foster family in VA listed as well....not many of my Fosters are connected to each other. I was hoping to find some parents and connections to the Fosters who married into the lines. The granddaughter of Joseph Edwards, Elizabeth Bertha Bruns who married James Foster Jr. (LI area) is my father's sister, and my aunt/cousin. I would be happy to send reports/gedcoms of the LI/Suffolk Fosters that I have information on to anyone's personal mailbox. Let me know if you want this. I am also interested in Vail, Gardiner, Mulford, Young, Downs, Conklin, and connecting lines (all spellings). I would be glad to do lookups in my files to see if I have anything on your names.... The Foster Family that I found, starts with Christopher Foster b 1603, d 1687 married Frances and left London June 17, 1635. The family goes on for a few pages and ends with Wakeman, who lived during the Revolutionary War. (1861-1865) The Edwards Family starts with William who came to East Hampton from Lynn with his wife in 1653. It ends with S Egbert who married Harriet Jessup, Sept 8, 1875. I forgot to check the date of publication, but will check it the next time I am at the library, the book is called "Howell's History of Southampton. If you can connect to either families, I can make copies...... Terre

Hi Mary Ellen, In response to your request for FOSTER information, I am sending this information. Is there any chance of connecting this line of FOSTER to the lines in L.I.? Gladys BRUNS is my Aunt,on my father's side; but I never knew the family, since my parents divorced. Her mother was Bertha EDWARDS, and I have obtained much EDWARDS related information. I realize that there was a lot of intermarrying amongst the lines in NY and was hoping to connect FOSTERS to their lines. Descendants of James Foster, Jr. Generation No. 1 1. JAMES1 FOSTER, JR. was born 1898 in NY1. He married ELIZABETH GLADYS BRUNS, daughter of FRANKLYN BRUNS and BERTHA EDWARDS. She was born October 27, 1898 in Southampton, Suffolk Co. NY2.
