Arrived in NY ahead of rest of family, have not matched definitively to a ship manifest. Married Sarah McVICKER (abt 1843 - ?) children: Henry Hughes (1860-?) McVicker Hughes (1862-1906) Sarah Hughes (1865 - ?) Charles W. Hughes (1871-?) William George Hughes (1872-1939) married Anna Schmersahl (my GG grandparents) Sarah McVicker Hughes arrived in NY with the 5 children on 22 Apr 1873. The family lived in Manhattan in 1880. After that I lose William Sr, Sarah & Sarah. Henry and Charles are also hard to find after 1900. I would like to find out both where in Ireland this family came from and what happened to them in NY. Their names are so common which is the biggest struggle. I have tried to make educated guesses and send away for death certificates and marriages, but so far no luck in matching them. Hi Meghan, The Irish homeland? This is everyone's dream. Not impossible, but not easy. Common Irish names are the given. Suggest that you collect as much as you can before going that homeland route. Both were born famine era, in Ireland. Marriage in Ireland. Would you post the census details in 1880 including county, ED and details of each? 1900 Census: Where are Henry Jr. and Charles? County, ED, details of family? It is possible that the parents and dau Sarah died by 1900. Certainly by then, all children may have married.
