I've settled on roots magic for the present - the free version as a trial. I can upload all of the info already stored on Ancestry. Roots magic will take Gedcom files. To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Dear Friends, That's an interesting idea, Pat. I thought that Tony was more interested in a "tree" related software, like "Family Tree Maker." Tony, would you please clarify? I hope the list will chime in here, as my experience with both is limited, although I own both. Maybe you have other suggestions for Tony. I haven't tried Dragon yet, but the directions mention "naturally speaking speech recognition software. ( For info> www.nuance.com) Perhaps I'm dating myself, but the concept reminds me of the old Dictaphones, without a secretary needed to listen and type what they hear. The software enables the user to speak into a microphone and then words print on screen. (Magic?) When I found it intact, unused for $ 1.99, rather than the $ 59.99 price tag, I had to grab it. My plan was to use it to record family stories, not chart out genealogy. Family Tree Maker (FTM), I think was the original program to create a "tree" and family charts. I think that this is what Tony wants as he expressed dissatisfaction with storing on Ancestry. It probably depend upon how much privacy you want, and how much control you have over it. Although new software programs came out after FTM, people seem to like differing features. Anyone with more information? Gene-logically speaking, Barb
