    1. [NY-IRISH] Using "Dragon" or FTM ?

    3. Dear Friends, That's an interesting idea, Pat. I thought that Tony was more interested in a "tree" related software, like "Family Tree Maker." Tony, would you please clarify? I hope the list will chime in here, as my experience with both is limited, although I own both. Maybe you have other suggestions for Tony. I haven't tried Dragon yet, but the directions mention "naturally speaking speech recognition software. ( For info> www.nuance.com) Perhaps I'm dating myself, but the concept reminds me of the old Dictaphones, without a secretary needed to listen and type what they hear. The software enables the user to speak into a microphone and then words print on screen. (Magic?) When I found it intact, unused for $ 1.99, rather than the $ 59.99 price tag, I had to grab it. My plan was to use it to record family stories, not chart out genealogy. Family Tree Maker (FTM), I think was the original program to create a "tree" and family charts. I think that this is what Tony wants as he expressed dissatisfaction with storing on Ancestry. It probably depend upon how much privacy you want, and how much control you have over it. Although new software programs came out after FTM, people seem to like differing features. Anyone with more information? Gene-logically speaking, Barb -----Original Message----- From: Pat Lewis via [email protected] THERE IS SUPPOSEDLY A NEW THING OUT CALLED "DRAGON: YOU CAN TALK TO IT AND IT TYPES OUT WHAT YOU SAID. WOULD BE GREAT, I THINK FOR GENEALOGY, AND I AM HOPING TO GET ONE FOR CHRISTMAS. YOU CAN FIND IT ONLINE AND PROBABLY WHERE TO BUY IT. I DO NOT UB TO ANCESTRY BECAUSE I HAVE RECEIVED TOO MANY "WRONG" PIECES OF INFO FROM THEM, AND I CANNOT PROVE IN ANY WAY WHAT THEY SEND BELONGS TO MY FAMILY. 3. ALL I KNOW IS FROM THE ADS SEEN ON TV. I DID ASK A FRIEND ABOUT IT WHO AT LEAST WOULD KNOW HOW TO HOOK UP AND GET STARTED. I IMAGINE IT AS SIMILAR TO THE OLD TYPE TAPE RECORDER WHERE WE COULD PLAY TAPES OF POPULAR SONGS, AND SOMEHOW MIXED WITH THE OLD TIME DICTAPHONES. FROM THE AD YOU WOULD TALK INTO/ONTO, (I DON'T KNOW WHICH), AND LIKE THE DICTAPHONE IT WOULD TYPE,ON IT'S OWN WHAT EVER IS SAID. I THINK PROBABLY A GREAT WAY TO SAVE YOUR GENEALOGY AN ANY STORIES HEARD OR ASKED OF RELATIVES , SO YOU HAVE A RECORD OF WHO SAID WHAT, OR POSSIBLY IF YOU WANT TO WRITE A BOOK…ON GENEALOGY OR JUST YOUR OWN LIFE AUTOBIOGRAPHY. I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE AS YET BUT MAYBE A SEARCH ON SAFARI WILL GIVE MORE INFO. AS TO DATING YOUR SELF..I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, HOWEVER, I AM REASONABLY SURE I AM MUCH OLDER THAN YOU. I HAVE QUIT LOOKING FOR ANYMORE IRISH RELATIVES, AFTER TRYING MORE THAN 20 YEARS FOR 3RD GRANDFATHER, SUPPOSEDLY BORN IN LAT 1700'S OR VERY EARLY 1800'S,SOMEWHERE IN CLARE , HOWEVER HIS ONE SON WAS SUPPOSEDLY BORN IN CORK IN 1824,ACCORDING TO CENSUS BRITISH RECORDS, BUT MOVED AT SOME POINT TO MIDDLESEX BEFORE 1870, AND RAISED FAMILY THERE, BUT NO INFO ANYWHERE ON "MY"3RD GRANDFATHER OR HIS WIFE, PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY WERE CATHOLICS. SO I AM GETTING ALL THE INFO TOGETHER AND SORTING BY FAMILY FOR A BOOKLET FOR MY 4 OF MY ADULT CHILDREN, WHO ARE NOW GRANDPARENTS THEMSELVES (EXCEPT MY YOUNGEST SON WHOSE CHILDREN ARE 4 &2 ). I DOUBT I WILL BE HERE TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. GOOD LUCK IF YOU LOOK INTO THE "DRAGON" AND FIND IT WORTH WHILE.
