Did you compare these records / dates with any Church records? A few years ago I did a study of reported age/birthdate of people listed in the Ireland- Clare- census of 1901 and 1911. Far more people were born in 1896, 1891, 1886, 1881, etc than any of the intervening years. There was obviously lots of age-rounding. The ten year intervals were greater than those of five years. This was no marginal "bulge." Look at this random example. Clare I'd guess that the rounding was done by both the census-taker and the person reporting for the household. Did they eyeball the children and report ages that seem sequential? Hi Bob, No, I didn't compare any of the names to Church records (other than my own family), because it was just an idle supposition on my part and would have required too much time. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my grandfather stuck to the straight and narrow on both censuses, neither adding nor subtracting.
