In two documents I saw that my g-grandmother was born in "S.I." but I thought it said "L.I." in script, and ignored it. Finally, Emigrant Savings Bank noted that the family moved in 1866 to "Van Pelt Pkwy, S.I." All along, the father was listed as a tailor in Manhattan, so I searched old maps for ferry routes, checked dates of origin of churches there, and BINGO! the first church I contacted had the birth certificate.
