I am researching my great grandparents James Joseph Phelan born about 1885 in Waterford County Ireland and Ellen Phelan nee Morrissey born about 1883 also in Waterford County Ireland. I would appreciate any information on them and/or their extended family. My records/research show he arrived in New York around 1901 and she arrived about 1898. They married in New York and then moved to Massachusetts where they had my grandmother in October 1903. This makes for a nice slim window of marriage between 1901 and 1902. My grandmother was brought to an orphanage about 1912 by James Phelan and he returned to New York to get work and she said he died there about 1915. I have not been able to find a marriage for James and Ellen or a death record for James. It seems to me New York is divided up into a lot a small pieces and not a central place to do a search. Also, my grandmother appears to have been their only child so there are not others researching I have come accross. I have found a couple of arrivals for a James Phelan but have not been able to tell if they are him - the one that seems closest is from Tipperary which is not out of the question I suppose. Any information would be gratefully received. Janet
