How far back does this cover? For example, I tried to do some research for my aunt, whose grandmother Ellen Hayden Wenrick, was adopted (b. 1885, if I remember right), in Cattaraugus Co, NY. Any information would definitely be appreciated. Family lore says she was a daughter of a relative, and that her father was Buffalo Bill (aka, William Cody). The first part's probably true, the second.....doubtful, though, who knows for sure. It appears he travelled around a lot in this era, so it's possible. I do know for certain that her grandmother is always listed as "adopted" in the census records. They also usually state her mother was born in Canada, even though her adopted mother was born in NY, and was listed that way. Therefore, it seems highly likely that her true mother was born in Canada. My belief is that her mother was a niece of the couple, as her adopted father had a brother who came down through Canada to NY about this time, and had 3 daughters aged abt 15-19 when Ellen was born.
