>From everything I have read, if your grandmother had TB when leaving Ireland (a) she probably would not have been allowed on the ship to start with and (b) if she had it when entering NY (exhibiting symptoms) she would have been immediately quarantined and transferred from Ellis Island to one of the other island hospitals so she did not infect others. TB was highly contagious, especially back then and with the close quarters onboard. She would have been held in quarantine until she was well, died or was deported back to Ireland. Many ship passengers contracted serious illnesses while on shipboard, but since the trip from Ireland to NY took about 7 to 10 days (depending on stops) in the 1890s, if she contracted the illness onboard ship she probably would not have been sick enough upon entry into NY to be showing symptoms and quarantined.
