If they got married in 1901, he would have been only 16!  I think you may have your birth dates wrong.  Of course, my Irish ancestors all got younger with each census!   The New York City death index at Germangenealogygroup.com has a James J. Phelan, age 38, died Jan 14, 1915, Manhattan certificate # 1682.  You can order the certificate online from the municipal archives for $17.   Good luck Anna Caulfield 

Hi Anna; Thank you for your search and suggestion. I followed the link and found the record you refer to. It looks like a good site. I agree that the birth year may be off but it's the only record I have of them in the United States as he arrived about 1901 and apparently died before the 1920 census. I figure if he was born early in the year and it's a bit off he could have been about 18 or so. Do you happen to know how complete their database is? I am also looking for a marriage for James Phelan and Ellen Morrissey prior to the birth of their daughter in 1903 in Massachusetts. If they were married in New York would that database have it? I ask because I found one for an Ellen Morrissey and James J Lenihan but no other. Lenihan seems a bit of a stretch from Phelan but I did not find any other record. !!!
