I would like to remember a fallen veteran of the Spanish-American War, 1898. He is a collateral ancestor of mine, barely eighteen when he enlisted in New York's 71st Regiment, Company under Captain Rafferty. He enlisted under the grandiose promise of Victory and died alone in a hospital ship in Santiago Bay, Cuba from tropical fever induced by malnutrition. He was a son of Irish immigrants settling in Westchester County, NY, and I am thankful for his and his extended family's sacrifice. Jackie Dinan Brooklyn, NY
How sad! God Bless him & all that made the ultimate sacrifice. Thanks for sharing this story.
