Hi, folks. I wonder if someone can help me with this part of my family tree. I have a relative named Pauline, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what to call her (she's some kind of cousin, but trying to figure it out is giving me a headache). If there's someone who wouldn't mind taking a whack at this I'd be very grateful. Here it is: Pauline is the granddaughter of my maternal grandfather's sister-in-law's sister. What is Pauline to me? If I understand correctly, your maternal grandfather's sister-in-law is your grandmother's sister. (Unless his wife is not your grandmother.) Assuming she is - his sister in law is her sister...so his sister in law's sister also would be her sister. So...your grandmother's sister's child would be her niece or nephew, and Pauline would be your grandmother's great niece. You and Pauline have different grandmothers, but both your grandmothers share parents. That means you have the same great grandparents, so you are 2nd cousins. Pshew. I think.
