Barb ---------------------- "Song of The Old Mother" by William Butler Yeats I rise in the dawn, and I kneel and blow Till the seed of the fire flicker and glow; And then I must scrub and bake and sweep Till stars are beginning to blink and peep; And the young lie long and dream in their bed Of the matching of ribbons for bosom and head, And their days go over in idleness, And they sigh if the wind but lift a tress: While I must work because I am old, And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold.

    1. [NY-IRISH] TWISS family--re: BRICK WALL & NEED SOME HELP

    3. Hello, Everyone, I am in need of suggestions, please, if SKS would kindly help me. It was my Grfa. Wm. Jas. TWISS, who left Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland, 1877, 17 years of age on the JULIA, a frigate, where it would drop off supplies, from Edinburgh to Cork, to .......??? Now, this is where my research has stopped. The Captain (name unknown)was a good friend of his parents and for a trade of fees for the trip, he worked as an employee. I presume they did not want him to be caught at the other end?? And, again, his parents could not afford a proper ship fee? People have been suggesting the normal Destination Depots but I have not been able to find anything. My own thinking is this: Would these Suppliers Ships have their own Ports? And, I have looked into Boston but to no avail. I have, also, looked into a couple of others, and, again, I am lost. I know he went to New York to visit friends of his parents for awhile, then went on up into Ontario, Canada to stay with his cousins (family), awaiting the arrival of his parents and sisters through the St. Lawrence River, the following year. I read this in his first journal but did not have the time to finish it. And, now, no one in the family knows of its' existence. :( Is there anyone out there, "please", who might be able to suggest ideas/hints, at least, anything?? This would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Shannah TWISS overthepond648@gmail.com Canada Researching: TWISS all over the world

    3. Maybe you could list the places where you looked. Years ago someone told me they were having problems finding where their ancestor came from and even his true name. Seems his mother just managed to scrap together enough money to pay for his fare, kissed him, and put him on board and left him. He was to get off in say NY, but for some reason as too many people were landing at that port, he was not allowed to disembark at that port. He was taken to Canada where he disembarked. He had no one, but some couple felt sorry for him and took him in and raised him. That was all this descendant knew about him. So sad. > On May 6, 2016, at 6:04 PM, Ava Woods via <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Hello, Everyone, > > I am in need of suggestions, please, if SKS would kindly help me. > > It was my Grfa. Wm. 3. I'm glad you had this wonderful person in your life. Some of the less obvious people (other than family, close friends) in our lives really make the world go round in such a good way. My sympathies, Barb. I have to say I am tickled to see you mention The Merry Mailman.  I don't think there are many of us who remember him but I certainly do.  I was on that show as one of the kids in the peanut gallery--a Howdy Doody reference but I don't remember what the kids were called on the Merry Mailman.  There were only about ten kids each day. Maybe fewer. It was one of the many perks of being a NYC kid--easy access to being in/on all those shows.  My friend was having a birthday and her mother got tickets for two.  She invited me.  It was fun but being on TV was basically just another day at the office for a NYC kid. I did not realize my dream tho and that was being in the peanut gallery on Howdy Doody.  My cousins were on the show and I begged and begged my parents to get tickets but no luck. And do you remember The Children's Hour on Sunday mornings--at 11 I think.  I went to the 9am children's Mass, where we sat with our class, and then rushed home to eat breakfast and watch that show with Ed Herlihy.  We later lived in the town where he lived and he was a neighbor of my best friend's parents so I met him a number of times--still a bit awestruck. This may seem off-topic for genealogy but wouldn't we all love to hear our great-grandparents' stories about growing up in NYC long ago? Someday our stories may be of interest in the future.                 Virginia From: mizscarlettny via <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> To: nywestch@rootsweb.com; NY-IRISH@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, May 5, 2016 11:46 AM Subject: [NY-IRISH] OBIT: John Thomas Quinn Growing up in the 50's we Ray Heatherton on B&W TV as "The Merry Mailman."
