Hi Janet, and all, These two lists are invaluable for researching NYC Municipal Archives records. I recommend printing each one for easy reference. #1) NYC Municipal Archives "Holdings" http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/archives/holdings.shtml #2) NYC Municipal Archives "Collections" [Click on titles] http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/archives/collections.shtml Death *certificate* format began for New York and Kings Counties about 1866. Prior to 1866, births, marriages and deaths (BMD) are recorded as one meaty line of handwritten text, in ledgers, that are searchable on microfilm. Please note: Some early films are missing, too damaged to view, or have illegible handwriting. Searching early films is more time consuming than searching for certificates, even if one has to view index films as well as certificate films. Please remember: 1898 was the year that New York City consolidated the counties of New York, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. BMDs for *early* (pre-1898) Queens and (pre-1866) Kings Counties may be filed my neighborhoods, as was Whitestone, Queens and Flatbush, Brooklyn. Questions? Please contact me offlist. I gave the name, date of death. parents names and place of death. Since they did not find the record where might find it. I do not know the cemetery or church. I think the family was Catholic and may have attended Holy Cross Church but they have no record of the burial. I am really stumped on this. It's important to remember that these are sacramental records--which means baptism and marriage. Death is not a sacrament so no records were usually kept tho some parishes kept records for a few years or decades so it's always worth checking. I did find the death records for one set of my gt gt gt grandparents in Co Westmeath and that was pretty exciting. The National Library of Ireland has put up parish records for free at http://registers.nli.ie/ I have studied this for hours and find that, while not totally all inclusive of the records that are available on film, it is a pretty comprehensive collection. Apologies to all. My post below was in reply to a post by Alannal. It was NOT in reply to Joyce Presnall's most helpful post. I'm sorry for the confusion. Virginia I find your comments about priests unsubstantiated and offensive. Most Catholic parish registers were microfilmed decades ago and have now been digitized and are free online up to about 1880. After that, civil records are available for another few decades. Later church and civil records are not online for privacy reasons tho you can obtain them thru the processes described by the government for civil records or individual parishes for church records. Many--most?--people could not afford headstones. Very old headstones crumble or break and sink into the soil. Or the inscription is unreadable after so many years. It's not the least surprising you can't find old headstone information. Many priests were true Irish heroes and I hope you will read Irish history to learn more. Virginia From: alannal via <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> Just remember that there are probably stil the priests who keep a tight fist around their parish records. Maybe they want the money that might come from allowing the records to be seen as there would be no money if the records were totally released. In Balnacalley [sp?] the headstone information from the graveyard was put on line, but my kin except for a couple of current burials who should have been buried there over 200 years have no headstones -- lack of money to hand to the priest?

I do wish the best for that fellow. Sounds as if he will have a long recovery time. Mine was not so bad, but still it took so long and the surgeon said I came back the fastest, but I still have episodes years later. Please watch over him very carefully!! I was told by medical professionals that I'd never come back which did make me fight more. Maybe they did not want me to expect too much. But what you should watch for is something that happened to me. I had been very active, but seated in my wheelchair my working German Shepherds would come up to me to try to get me to again do things. I would get so sad that without my mother knowing, I'd cry. So please watch for that behind the scenes sadnesses. If I don't speak on this subject again, my thoughts and prayers are there for him. If you get tired, he cannot as he has to deal with it constantly. Prayers and best wishes to him, the others and to his family. This PDF list shows you where existing are held and the years that they have. Very few have been transcribed and since I have not seen anything added in 4 years, I wrote the RCBL (Representative Church Body Library) yesterday to ask when they expect this project to be finished. Here is the link for transcriptions that have been done and are online--there is other info on this site too so check it out http://ireland.anglican.org/about/168 HERE IS THE LINK FOR ALL OF IRELAND (COI ONLY) --BUT they are organized by Parish name not by County which makes searching them a bit difficult.
