    1. Re: [NY-IRISH] Dead person in census?
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Yes, Virginia, I have found a dead person in census records...more than once. Most recently in the US Mortality Schedules. Afterwards, I searched the NY County Death Index, then NY County Death Certificate microfilms at NYC Muni Archives. I could not find a DC for Thomas KEYES in IGG/GGG. The same search method can be performed for your Julia SHEEHAN. Note: Read the fine print atop the census form. Directions say to include anyone who died from June 1, 1879 to Mary 31, 1880. Try it on ANCESTRY: Enter >Thomas KEYES, born Ireland, died 1879 Manhattan, NYC. You'll have the option of >>>> U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885 Death details are stated in this census. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com -----Original Message----- From: VLB via <vlbcfb@yahoo.com Has anyone ever found a dead person in the census? I have a Julia Sheehan, age 11, in Brooklyn in the 1870 census. Parents William and Ann, my gt gt grandparents. This appearance is the only record of her existence...They had a family grave at Calvary and she is not in it. Can't find a death record tho except for a Julia Sheehan, born to William and Ann, in Manhattan on 13 July 1861. That Julia died 2 August 1861. This could be another family with same names. My Sheehans were in Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn abt 1867-68 where they had more children.I do have other gt gt grandparents who reported all five of their children in Manhattan in the 1850 census tho four were still in Ireland--came in 1851--so this idea is not totally unknown. So has anyone found a dead person in any census? 3. I have not ever found a dead person in the census. Could someone else in the family have been recorded as Julia? What other children did the family have, and are they all represented in the 1870 census? One of my biggest confusions was a totally unexpected additional daughter in my g-g-grandparents' family on the 1900 census. BUT, my great-grandmother was missing from the family. Eventually I figured out that she had been enumerated under her first name (little did I, or even her sons, know that the name she went by her whole life was her middle name) AND the enumerator had added a decade to her age (recorded as 13 instead of 3). I looked at a record for a 13-year-old named Anna and it never occurred to me that she was actually a 3-year-old I knew as Molly. Or, since relationship to the head of household isn't recorded in 1870 (I think), could she have been someone else entirely (cousin, friend, boarder, hired help) who was accidentally given the last name of the rest of the family? I've seen that happen at times. Are there any other Julias at all who show up in Sheehan research? 2. Pat Connors via
    3. >From the Genealogy In Time Magazine online: http://www.genealogyintime.com/ Canada – FamilySearch.org has created a new browsable image collection of Saint John, New Brunswick burial permits dating from 1889 to 1919. There are roughly 14,000 images in this new collection and each image typically lists four permits. Thus, this collection covers roughly 50,000 burials. The images are organized by date. A typical burial record in this collection (see image below) lists the name of the deceased, date of death, gender, marital status, spouse’s name (if married), color, age, residence, occupation, place of death, place of birth, name of father, birthplace of father, place of internment and cause of death. Access is free. https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://familysearch.org/recapi/sord/collection/2250090/waypoints Canada – The website BritishColonist.ca has increased their online collection of historic newspapers from Victoria, British Columbia. The collection now spans the years from 1858 to 1950 (the original release only went to 1910) and includes the British Colonist, the Daily British Colonist and the Daily Colonist. These are all essentially the same newspaper that has changed names over the years. It is still published today in Victoria as the Times Colonist. The most recent addition to the online archive (1941 to 1950) covered some 67,000 pages. Dave Obee, a well-known Canadian genealogist, is the current editor-in-chief of the Times Colonist. The Times Colonist is the oldest newspaper in Western Canada. It is a wealth of information for anyone researching Victoria, Vancouver Island and the surrounding areas. To film one volume costs in the region of €300. We are working on a project to actively seek funding to complete the work of digitization but are competing with many other repositories and interest groups. In the interim we have endeavoured to make our resources available online in a monthly online exhibition area called Archive of the Month. 3. Sorry l I forget to edit out all the thread etc I hate gmail for that! In addition when I say I have not have luck with churches I have tried to get records from MANY denominations--even outside of NYC ---if you email them MOST don't even reply. They probably consider us a nuisance especially when you are dealing with NYC and metropolitan areas. Many folks have not been to NYC and the surrounding counties BUT I grew up on Long Island and know NYC a bit too having grown up not far from there. There are TONS of people living there and TONS more who's ancestors lived there at one time or another. You will have better luck in smaller towns to be sure. NYC and the "surrounding metropolitan areas" have TONS of people and cannot possibly cater to genealogy researchers due to sheer volume. Don't expect much help when it comes to just about anything---not even the library. These folks are just too busy with everyday things and they really could care less about our "urgent genealogical needs". If you have never been to NYC or the counties surrounding it, you cannot possibly imagine the scope of them doing research for anyone who contacts them. Be grateful that many cemeteries put info on line and if you call them they will give you even more. MOST cemeteries can give you the DOD and a lot of other info. Rule of thumb I use if they only have burial date is that the person died 3 days prior. That is pretty typical. 3. What folks need to remember is that the churches function is to run the church--NOT to do genealogical research. I have run into issues with every church I have encountered save one. I ALWAYS offer to make a sizable contribution to them for assistance (and NOT just a measly $10-$20) BUT the Catholic Churches are a problem--most want an arm and a leg for info re burials. While I have issues with that, I cannot do anything about it but accept it and move on. I just go around them and try to find info another way... It is not our "right" to have churches digging through all their records looking for our ancestors. That is why it is important to do Find a Grave entries for your folks if you find them. Don't depend on churches and cemeteries to give you info. They are running a business--not a charity. Be grateful when a cemetery gives you info for free--and express your gratitude to them.
