    1. [NY-IRISH] Many, many, many thanks
    2. Pat Connors via
    3. I would just like to thank all of you who prayed for my grandson, Sean, after his recent car accident. Yesterday, he was up walking! He still has lots of physical therapy to go through, but he is doing so well. I want to thank you for all your prayers and good wishes. Without your effort, I do not think Sean would be this well today. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com nymets22@gmail.com

    1. [NY-IRISH] OBIT: Shane QUINN
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Shane Quinn of Woodlawn, New York and County Tyrone Ireland passed away on Monday, May 24rd. He was 39 years old. Raised in Drumquin by his parents Eamonn and Patricia Quinn, Shane was one of six children. He attended St. Joseph and St. Mary's Primary Schools and St. Patrick's Secondary School. After school, Shane went to work for the RJ Smith Fabrication Co. for seven years. Wanting to seek out new opportunities; Shane left Ireland and moved to Woodlawn, New York, US in 2000. He would find work in the construction industry and create a life for himself with many friends. Shane was a kind and good-natured man. He cared deeply for his family and friends. One of his favorite pass times was watching soccer, especially his beloved Manchester United. An easygoing man, Shane was by all accounts very handsome. He could be often heard joking, "By God, I'm good looking". And indeed he was, inside and out. Shane is survived by his parents, Eamonn and Patricia and his brothers and sisters: Aaron, Fiona, Brenda and Dermot. He will be missed by his son Ryan. He will be lovingly remembered by his fiancé, Jeanette O'Gorman. Shane is predeceased by his brother Kevin. A celebration of Shane's life will be held at Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Ave, Pelham, NY on Saturday, May 28th from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Shane will be flown home for interment at St. Patrick's Cemetery Langfield, Drumquin, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. For more information or to leave a condolence, please visitwww.pelhamfuneral.com.

    3. Pat I am in need of tracking part of my maternal ancestry who came in the early 1800's to New York. The Young family (by the time I discovered this line Margaret (Fair) Young was a widow living with her daughter Sarah and husband Andrew Barr in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, NY. They were not Catholic but they also were not of a practicing faith if appears. My grandmother was the youngest granddaughter said that they were not members of any church. I suspect that they came from Northern Ireland but I have not proof at this time. I have found 2 of her married daughters in their individual Census 1870 and 1880 Margaret revealed born in Ireland and Sarah born in NYC. and if memory serves me correctly when they departed Ireland at least Margaret with her husband (first name is unknown) and one daughter also named Margaret. I don't know if there were other members of this family. They seem to have crossed over to England and shipped out to America before 1835. Margaret (FAIR) Young was born about 1791 and probably died after 1882 in New York may be the daughter of John and Jane (Dempsey) Fair. Someone was working on this line separate of my own research didn't have a source to share on this information. Margaret Young married David I. Smith both are buried at St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in Mount Vernon. Sarah possibly born in NYC married Sarah Young married in NYC to a fabric dealer Andrew Barr and they had 3 daughters. I only suspect that Sarah was born in Ireland. I found them in Mount Vernon later. I have no proof that this is my David Smith. Possible connection of David I. Smith to Ireland: Source Ancestry: Name: David Smith Father: John Smith Baptism: 17 Jun 1817 - Eglish Parish, Armagh, Ireland Margaret Young was born on 5 October 1822 in Ireland. A picture of her headstone was located by request to “Find a Grave” and answered on 14 December 2012

    3. Good post, Barb. I have had the occasion to use their genealogy services and they were very good and I got great info, but they do charge. Your death cert will give place of burial. If Woodlawn, go to their site and do a search. I was searching SMITH, so got lots of hits, but then I searched each member of the family and they were all in two graves, so I paid for their research. 1. [NY-IRISH] Genealogy records online and free to see
    2. Pat Connors via
    3. Thanks to Genealogy In Time online magazine: http://www.genealogyintime.com/ I have included records from the UK, New Zealand and Australia because many Irish emigrants went there and in my family branches, brothers and sisters have been located in all three. US – FamilySearch.org has indexed 106,000 New Hampshire birth certificates spanning the years from 1901 to 1915. These records come from the New Hampshire Division of Vital Records. See the sample image of a New Hampshire birth record below. The records can be searched by first name and last name. Access is free. [Historic New Hampshire Birth Certificates] https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1876928 New Zealand – FamilySearch.org has indexed the burial records from Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland. This is New Zealand’s largest cemetery and since 1908 it has served as the main cemetery for the Auckland region. The records in this collection span the years from 1886 (when the cemetery was first established) to 1948. There are roughly 27,000 records in this collection. A typical burial record (see image below) lists the name of the deceased, age, date and place of death and burial, occupation, cause of death, place of birth, religion and years in the province. Please note that if you happen to be looking through historic documents that the original spelling of the cemetery was Waikomiti. These records can be searched by first name and last name. Access is free. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2365063 UK – FamilySearch.org has put online the cemetery registers from Oldham, Lancashire. Oldham is now part of greater Manchester and this collection covers the following cemeteries: Hollinwood, Failsworth, Royton, Crompton, Chadderton, Lees and Greenacres. In total, there are some 480,000 records in this collection, which spans the years from 1797 to 2004. A typical record lists the name of the deceased, age, date and place where death occurred, date and place of burial and the grave number. The records can be searched by first name and last name. Access is free. [Oldham Burial Records] https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1482833 New Zealand – The popular New Zealand website Papers Past is testing a new beta version of the website. The objective is to improve the search tools and provide more kinds of content. For those who are not familiar with Papers Past, it is the definitive source for researching historic New Zealand newspapers. It has over four million pages of digitized content. The website now also has historic magazines and journals, letters and diaries and parliamentary papers. It is run by the National Library of New Zealand. The website can be searched by keyword (like name), date range and title. Did we mention that it is free? https://beta.paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ US – FamilySearch.org has indexed some 172,000 Arkansas ex-Confederate pension records. These records date from 1891 to 1939 and come from the Arkansas State Auditor (who was responsible for managing and disbursing the pension payments). Although these records don’t provide much detail (see image below), they are a fascinating record set. This collection can be searched by first name and last name. Access is free. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1921864 -- Pat Connors, Sacramento, CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. After multiple emails I finally got the folks at above site to send me a link to a list of everything they have on line. It is no wonder we cannot find folks in IRE--the list is VERY short. Yet this site and the Anglican site don't even have a place on their sites for people to contribute $ to get the job done. Here is the list of parishes on Irishgenealogy.ie http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/parishes.jsp This list looks very similar (if not exactly the same) to what the RCB has on their site and it makes me wonder if the only things on the Irishgenealogy site is FROM the RCB. I have been in touch with Dr Susan Hood at the RCB and suggested they put up a "button" where we can contribute via secure Credit Card link--she will get back to me about how we might be able to contribute at some point They are working on getting a grant of some type to help get their records done---they are being charged $300 per register---I have looked at some of the registers that have been completed--they are not very long...at $300 a pop it might be forever before we can find any of these records on line. I will post when Dr Hood gets back to me with a way to contribute to their site---I hope if they do put a way to contribute on their site, folks will dig deep into their pockets. At the rate things are going your great great grandchildren may not even be able to get to these records unless we try to help "move it along". Disappointing to say the least :-( Joyce -- Researching Stephenson/Stevenson, Fleury, Heald, Lindelof, Young, Rubino, Cammarota, Mandracchia, Vaiarelli, Mulhern, Johnson, Haight, Erickson, Munson, Northrup, Sears, Camp, Gunn, Allen, Gorham, Plumb, Beard, Rogers, Eliot, Briscoe, Bradley, Mix, Wilmot, Pritchard, Mew, Stone, Sparke, Bayley, Bailey, Redfield, Redfin, Howland, Tilley, Sturgis, Hinckley, Kirk, Norton, Gerard, and many more...

    1. Re: [NY-IRISH] [NYC-ROOTS] Dead person in census?
    2. VLB via
    3. I have wondered if it was a visiting cousin.  I have accounted for all the other children til death via census and death records.  I have not found another Julia but their life in Manhattan is a brick wall.  Sheehan is a very common name and spelled so many ways. Tragic to report but of seven children, five lived to adulthood, three died in their 20s, two married and only one had children--my gt grandmother who had two boys so no Julia.                  Thanks--Virginia From: Kathleen Scarlett O'Hara Naylor <kathleen.scarlett.ohara@gmail.com>   I have not ever found a dead person in the census. Could someone else in the family have been recorded as Julia? What other children did the family have, and are they all represented in the 1870 census? One of my biggest confusions was a totally unexpected additional daughter in my g-g-grandparents' family on the 1900 census. BUT, my great-grandmother was missing from the family. Eventually I figured out that she had been enumerated under her first name (little did I, or even her sons, know that the name she went by her whole life was her middle name) AND the enumerator had added a decade to her age (recorded as 13 instead of 3). I looked at a record for a 13-year-old named Anna and it never occurred to me that she was actually a 3-year-old I knew as Molly.  Or, since relationship to the head of household isn't recorded in 1870 (I think), could she have been someone else entirely (cousin, friend, boarder, hired help) who was accidentally given the last name of the rest of the family? I've seen that happen at times. Are there any other Julias at all who show up in Sheehan research?
