    1. [NY-IRISH] After the NYC Municipal Archives...
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. The latest from the NYC Municipal Archives is the retirement of Tony some two weeks ago. He was my go-to guy and their most hands-on-knowledgeable staff member. And, and he is not being replaced...as if he could be! Last I knew, he was the only one who could navigate the physical building-lot book for folks to order WPA house photographs.* Since microfilm cabinets were shuffled around, Tony was the *only* one who knew what landed where, or at least could figure it out! The Archives already has a backlog of internet and mail orders. Add in summer vacations, and it's leaning toward a long, hot queuefor folks ordering certificates. So...who ya gonna call? Yours truly. One of my keeping-it-close-to-the-vest bits about Tony was that he grew up nearby the Archives. Right around the corner from my gg grandfather's SE-gar shop! Ohhhh the stories. Yup, Tony was dutifully at work when the World Trade Center was hit. Just name the street, the address, the park, bridge, building, post-1950, and Tony lived it. So here's to my buddy, Tony. May his trips to DisneyWorld be many. May his beers always be cold. May the whiff of some lady's perfume always signal him home. Until we meet again, I'll never mimic his, "Fugitabowtit." * HOUSE/BUILDING PHOTOS http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/photos/photos.shtml Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com

    1. [NY-IRISH] NYC Clergy & churches 1786 - 1833
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Take a look at Tom Gregory's transcriptions of Olde New York City Directories, 1786 - 1833. *It's indispensable, especially when you're unsure of their ancestors' religious persuasion.* He extracted names of ministers and/or churches from LDS microfilms, whichever appeared. Often the ward number is included. http://longislandgenealogy.com/NYC_Churches.html Remember, in those days, New York City was essentially Manhattan Island. This Dave Rumsey map from 1835 notes existing churches on the left. This is an interactive map. http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~214674~5501698:City-Of-New-York?sort=Pub_Date%2CPub_List_No_InitialSort?&qvq=q:City%3D%27New%2BYork%27%22%2B;sort:Pub_Date%2CPub_List_No_InitialSort;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=33&trs=603 Peruse the list head to tail. You'll see which religions predominated. For example, in the early days, there are many Dutch Reformed Churches, and more African Churches than Catholic. These are the total listings for 1787, as fledgling America launched. 1787- FHL fiche 6052945 No listing of churches. It was the first time in America that Jews of Eastern Europe had built a synagogue from the ground up." http://www.eldridgestreet.org/history/ (B) Eldridge Street Museum Discount>>>https://www.livingsocial.com/deals/1594148-museum-at-eldridge-street-admission-and-tour?cvosrc=affiliate.cj.594343&utm_campaign=594343&utm_content=3724478&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=cj II. 89-93 "RIVINGTON STREET CHURCH": four separate congregations; [Consecutive street numbers indicate side by side lots. Even numbers on one side, odd on the opposite.] (A) What's ironic is that that this old Manhattan church was built for Presbyterians to convert Jewish residents, but it backfired! As history unraveled, it became the heart of Jewish life on the Lower East Side. In 1857, it was known as "First German Presbyterian Church" and "German Evangelical Church of NYC." Then, in 1864, it housed an Orthodox German-Jewish congregation. By 1890, it was known as the *Allen Street Memorial Church (Methodist). Finally, in 1902, it was the First Roumanian-American Congregation (Jewish), until the building collapsed in January 2006. [* The Allen Street congregation moved into the 89-93 Rivington Street building and retained its name. ]** (B) Building Architectural Photos>>> http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LES/LES036.htm As I used advise students: It's easier to edit than compose. 3. I think you may be conflating two different buildings. The Museum at Eldridge Street, which you linked to and which the Living Social deal is for, is at 12 Eldridge Street and is still standing. I believe the building has always been a Jewish synagogue, though I'm not sure. The building several blocks away at 83 Rivington St. is the one that has bounced around between religions and denominations and was demolished in 2007. I don't know if either of them was ever known as the Eldridge St. Church, as one was not a church and the other was not on Eldridge Street!
