    1. [NY-IRISH] DNA testing
    2. Pat, It's because the Y chromosome is used on the male: Y-chromosome One of the two sex chromosomes, X and Y. The Y-chromosome passes down from father to son. Females do not receive it. The fact that the Y-chromosome goes down the paternal line makes it valuable for genealogy studies, since it typically follows a surname line. With a female: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) The genetic material found in mitochondria. It is passed down from females to both sons and daughters, but sons do not pass down their mother's mtDNA to their children. It's a bummer for us females but until a new test comes up testing on the X chromosome we'll have to be patient. Nora Hopkins FitzGerald In a message dated 2/28/2009 3:12:54 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, carmodyp@bellsouth.net writes: In reference to the DNA testing. Why can't the woman be tested for finding ancestors or match to a name? Suppose there are NO male relative to do the testing? Is there a list of names to check to see if any of the names would match family names so you could check against them? The ones in my family all from Ireland, that I am looking for did have a common name once upon a time CARMODY, but I understand the name is not in the top 100 now, also looking for Doyle,( which is very common, I think), Cronin, Ring, Mulcahy, Herrick and Holt, some being born in Ireland and moving/immigrating to England. 3. Basic biology. The standard DNA testing uses the Y chromosome, which only males (excluding abnormal cases of involving polyploidy, which means having more chromsomes than is normal or safe) have. Some basic genealogy books will explain this better than I can (with diagrams, to boot!). 3. I, too, have no male relatives that could be tested for DNA for geneological purposes, so they did use the maternal DNA route, which doesn't seem to be as promising. When they find "matches" it's pretty involved and only some of them provide their GEDCOM files so you can see if you have anyone there who might be related to you. I have now received about 125 matches and after contacting a number of them, no matches. Not everyone responds, as well.
