I have just put the 6th ward of this census online (Troy section of my website). I contains 3,126 individuals living in 319 dwellings and in 596 families. There are 10 wards in the 1865 NYS census. We are currently working in the 8th ward and all of the 7th ward pages have been assigned. The people to thank for giving up some of their time to help others, the transcribers of this ward, are: Terry Bora, Kay Brearton, Austin Fadden, Amy La Pietra, Lynn Grice, Sharon King, Bob McConihe, and Earl Smith. A few of them do pages every day and do them very well. So far, there are 18,922 individuals listed in the first 6 wards. Again, I must caution you to please read the NOTES listed with each ward. Each ward had different enumerators whose entries can be very different from each other. For instance, some listed 'child', others listed son, daughter. Some had trouble with the relationships. Anything found peculiar and/or different is listed in the NOTES. Plus, the notes for the various wards do differ from each other. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
FYI, I have McKeevers in Co. Tyrone -- be aware this is can be an alternate spelling of McIvor, so be open-minded when searching the name. (I know, you didn't say your McKeevers were from Co. This was another repeated message, Frank. We clarified, and you provided even more details, that this specific male DNA is not possible through the lady who posted or her brother. Bob, aka Rdpiet & BBookken, besides filling in "tree holes," DNA is a useful way to connect Irish names which are often problematic because the given and surnames may both be common. SEE: http://peterspioneers.tripod.com/biggins.htm The only handicap with a DNA surname project, is that you need participants. For anyone who choses to do DNA testing, please submit results to FamilyTreeDNA at http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1 Any males with the surname BURKE, in Manhattan circa 1880-1940, or their male descendants on Long Island and in Metro NY, please consider participating in this surname study. Two inside cheek scrapings submitted to this program, is all that is needed. Anyone on Brooklyn, recall Kathleen BURKE who posted from an ATT email address? I have no financial affiliations with DNA programs. Barb N of NYC ************** A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! I apologize - I made an error when I typed the e-mail address for the library. lhg@onlib.org This should work. Ellen I tried to send a message to the Onondaga Library using the address you posted on NY-IRISH-L and the address was rejected by my server!
To request a lookup for New York State marriages deaths etc. contact the Onondaga Library in Syracuse. They have a copy of what NARA in NYC has. They will do lookups within a 5 year span. Believe their records start at 1881. lig@onliborg To see FHC/LDS films for NYC and its boroughs go to site below. It is a WIKI for all boroughs. Go to bottom of page for links. I find it easier than searching for each borough separately. You can then order the films from your local LDS center. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Kings_County%2C_New_York Happy Hunting, Ellen
My ggrandfather was also John born Co Tyrone Ireland 1851 married Margaret McKeever 1872 in NYC. They lived in Manhatton also. They had 10 children. His father was Francis married to Mary Annie Breesen. John's siblings were William, Jane, Margaret, Mary and James. We could be related somewhere in this. Pat O'Fallon

To Miz Scarlett Are the Grooms Index at the NYC NARA online? I'm trying to find my grandparents marriage somewhere in NYC with no luck so far. William Taggart married Harriett G. Nevins on 17 Mar 1894. Thank you for any help or suggestions.
Thank you very much for the offer of help.? I have some good news.? After 5 weeks of waiting, I just received the death certificate today from NYC for my GG Grandfather and I think I found the death certificate for my GG Grandmother in the index.? The name was misspelled, but I'm sure it is her; I'll find out for sure when I get the copy. Alas, the bad news is no additional info (place of birth, names of parents) was given on his death certificate. Thanks again for the offer. Click on "View Film Notes" in the upper left hand corner. Now you are at the actual reel listing.? Look for the year and certificate # range you want.? Be careful because it is so easy to write down the wrong reel. Write the reel number in the first column of your form. You can request up to 8 certificates at a time, every two weeks. I've found it very easy to fax the request to the number on the front of the form.? I usually get a response in two weeks. If you don't have the certificate number and can't find it on www.italiangen.org, you can also order the film containing the death index for that year in the same method.? LDS will send you a copy of the page with the name you are searching and then you can request the certificate in your next request. There two sets of records here that you're conflating. NYC Municipal Archives have historic NYC BMD indexes and records. These are being indexed online at ItalianGen.org and GermanGenealogyGroup.com (as time, budget, and volunteers allow). Any years / boroughs not on these sites but at the Municipal Archives (e.g., excluding the modern BMDs) must be searched in person at the Municipal Archives. See the Municipal Archives list of holdings at http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/holdings.shtml . NARA NY purchased a copy of the NYS (excluding NYC) BMD indexes. These can only be viewed in person (but are not exclusive to NARA, of course -- you may find somewhere near you also purchased a copy of the microfiche index). So, if you're looking for a NYC M, the NARA fiche will not help you -- these are exclusively for "upstate" NY. You need the Municipal Archives records (with online indexes as above). HTH Claire K. Hi Clare, Without knowing your grandfather, my guess is that he's estimating each generation was about 25 when their child was born (1765-1790-1815 are at 25-year intervals). Without more info, then, I would regard the two oldest (and maybe all three) dates as placeholders only. (Is there a record of where the 1815-1820 DOB came from? Is it a guess, an educated guess, or fairly well documented?) As for 1815-1820 baptisms, it will depend on the parish and denomination. Most Catholic sacramental records don't survive before the 1820s or 1830s, but there are some places where they start much later (Donegal!) and some where there are earlier records. CoI, Presbyterian, etc. records are more likely to survive from earlier dates. Do you have a location, and so the Irish researcher was giving you info specific to a location and denomination? Or do you not know the location, and so the Irish researcher was telling you the rule of thumb (which might or might not be relevant to your research)? The closest you can come to verifying the 1765 and 1790 dates is 1) if church records exist in the relevant area for the relevant denomination, or 2) if the Old Age Pension files (which pulled info from the 1841 and 1851 censuses, among other sources) survive, if you have someone in the family who was still living in the UK as of 1908+ (when the OAP was introduced) and they applied for an OAP, and if the older generation was living with the family in the 1841/1851 census and was transcribed in the OAP files. Most surviving OAP files are from the north, FWIW. HTH Claire K.
