    1. [NY-IRISH] NYS Hospitals 1935
    2. http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Directory/1935.Hosp.NYState.html Although this is a list of hospitals in NYS in 1935, you might google the TB sanitariums individually to determine when each facility opened. The essential treatment for TB then, due to its highly contagious nature, was to remove those stricken from the pollution and stench of the cities, and send them folks off to "the country" for fresh air and sunshine. This is a pulmonary infection. In 1900, Queens, Nassau, areas of Brooklyn, Bronx, Westchester, and Rockland counties were considered "county." Other such sanitariums were located off northern train routes, in Poughkeepsie, Goshen, and in the Adirondeck [sp?] and Catskill Mountains. I've even seen antique photos of TB facilities where patients were bundled in blankets, to lay out on open porches, to catch the sunrays on a cold winter's day! Barb

    3. Many TB patients went to the Saranac Lake area in new York State in hopes of curing their illness. I believe the name of the sanitarium was Raybrook. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Erin James" <ej@tampabay.rr.com> To: <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 9:16 AM Subject: [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium > Seeing the post about the Quarantine Hospital gave me a thought: I've been > told that my grandmother traveled from Ireland to New York to cure her TB. > This would have been in the late 1890s, I think. 3. I will look and see if they are on Ancestry. The first time I saw these books were years ago at the NYC Public Library at 5th Ave and 42nd St. Next time I saw them was in the Albany State Library. I remember them on NARA but I find that site a bite confusing to navigate when you haven't been on it for a while. This was once on Ancestry.com, but I think they eliminated the word > "Famine." > > > > The Famine Immigrants Lists of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of > > New > > > York, 1846-1851 > > > -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. I believe this used to be on the NARA site. They had all the names from the books indexed with ships and dates. However, it has been a long time since I used the site and I just checked and see they changed it around again. Maybe someone on the list has a direct url for it. > > The Famine Immigrants Lists of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New > York, 1846-1851: Volume IV April 1849-September 1849 > Authors: Ira A. 2. Clare Higgins
    3. Hi, folks. Does anybody have the following book, or could you tell me where I could go to consult it? The Famine Immigrants Lists of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New York, 1846-1851: Volume IV April 1849-September 1849 Authors: Ira A. Glazier: Editor. Michael Tepper: Associate Editor If you do have the book, would you mind looking up the following for me? These are my great-great-grandparents. Morris (also spelled Maurice and Muiris) and Kathryn Higgins, arrived in either U.S. or Canada, 1850 They emigrated from Ireland in 1850 but I'm not sure if they landed in Canada or in the U.S. There's an 1850 census that shows them living in Moira. But I found a passenger list from 1850 showing a Morris Higgins (35, the right age to be my GGGF), arriving by himself in New York. Also, could someone look this up in the book: January 22, 1853 Passenger List. Ship: Ashburton, from Liverpool to New York: Catherine Higgins emigrating from Ireland to New York with sons Morris (age 10) and John (age 8). It's definitely my GGGM. Those are her sons' names and ages. Thanks for any help and/or info. Clare Higgins

    1. [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium
    2. Erin James
    3. Seeing the post about the Quarantine Hospital gave me a thought: I've been told that my grandmother traveled from Ireland to New York to cure her TB. This would have been in the late 1890s, I think. I have my doubts about the story but wonder if anyone can think of some way to check it out? The person who told me is the last remaining member of the family and her memory may be flawed, but I'd love to find out. Any thoughts? ----- Original Message ----- From: <ny-irish-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 3:01 AM Subject: NY-IRISH Digest, Vol 4, Issue 168 > > > ====NY-Irish Mailing List==== > Don't forget to check out the NY-Irish mailing list website. I have reason to believe that my great-great-grandparents emigrated from Ireland and landed in Canada. This is because the first record I find of them in the U.S. is a census record from 1850, in Moira, Franklin County, New York. I've learned that Canadian immigration records are not available on line. Does anybody know where I can go to research them? Thanks. 1. [NY-IRISH] To Francesca: RE: Question: Canada Immigration Records
    2. Clare Higgins
    3. Hi, Francesca. Here's all the info I have on my great-great-grandparents: Morris (or Maurice or Muiris) Higgins, born c. 1815 in County Mayo His wife: Kathryn (or Catherine) Flanagan, born c. 1815 in County Limerick Married: February 2, 1838 Emigrated to U.S.: 1850 Probably had a daughter Margaret with them, age 2. I think Kathryn was also pregnant with another child. They settled in Moira in 1850 and lived there three years. Then Catherine went to Ireland and came back with three more of their kids: Morris Jr., Cornelius and John, and the family settled in Hudson, NY in 1853. I would very much appreciate whatever you can find. Thank you so much.
