Has anyone here ever traveled to Moira, Franklin County, NY? Is it easy to get to by train or bus? My GGGPs might have lived there from 1850 to 1853 and I'd like to go there and do some research. Clare

Hi Anne Marie, you could start at the Library using their city directories. They are wealth of information. There people at the Library are very helpful and understanding. I have just started loading the 9th ward online (Troy section of my website). Tonight and tomorrow I should finish getting all the pages online. This ward has 4,771 individuals living in 566 dwellings and 958 families. There are now over 30,000 individuals indexed and online. Only the 10th ward remains and all pages have been assigned so that should be going online in a few weeks. The good people to thank for transcribing the 9th ward are: Terry Bora, Amy La Pietra, Sharon King, Bob McConihe, and Earl Smith. Their efforts are to be commended for their dedication and accuracy. This was a horrible ward to work on due to the enumerator's lack of spelling and consistency. Please read the transcription notes. Once the 10th ward is online, I will create an full index, like I have done with the other censuses that we have transcribed, for easier searching. Once you find someone of interest, please go to the Family History Library pilot website and look at the census. You can find the image by noting the dwelling and family numbers. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Hi Theresa, You might try the free Historical New York Times, online beginning in 1851. Just keep googling. The question is that since this was a city run facility, would they be considered to be city employees. If they are, you might be able to search his work history at the NYC Muni Archives. Thank you so much for in information re: Charity Hospital. My husbands grandfather, Dr. Tjheodore F. Heller, gave his place of practice as Charity Hospital. Do you know of any place that I could get more information about the working inside of the Hospital? Theresa Heller
Hi Theresa, The Charity Hospital was located on Blackwell's Island, later renamed Welefare Island, and today known as Roosevelt Island. There are many more "hits' via a Google search, as well as U-tube films of the property. First I have to apologize that in my haste I was forgetting to delete the lengthy posts to which I responded. Secondly, thank you all for your help with my question about the TB Sanatorium. I only recently heard that my grandmother came to the US from Ireland to be treated. I'm not sure about that, and no one is still living who could verify the information. I'm basing my inquiry on the memory of one 87 year old woman who is pretty sharp, so it could be so. However, I wouldn't have thought a person would be allowed into the US if they had TB. But, if they were bound for a hospital for treatment I suppose it could be possible? I'm also not sure, but I think there might have been family living in Long Island (so much still to learn!) so it is possible she went to Long Island for treatment. I have sent a letter of inquiry to Sea View Historic Foundation, Inc. I'll keep digging! Thank you all. Erin
Thanks for reminding us of this, Pat. That last digest mode was a confusing mess with so many repeats of a long original post. This is an FYI about the same topic, from a written English point of view.? When you are quoting someone's post, you add quotation marks preceding and after their exact words.? More importantly, we want to hone in on the main question posted, so want to cut and paste that original question. Sometimes we get wordy, so all you have to do is add three dots = ...? This indicates to readers that you deleted some of the poster's text, but are including the important parts, WITHOUT changing the meaning. Hope this helps. Hello: I believe one was missing from that list. The Suffolk TB Sanitorium established in 1912 in Selden, on Long Island. It later became Suffolk County Community College in 1962. A beautiful campus with large dogwood trees in bloom when you were taking finals. http://www.topix.com/album/detail/selden-ny/IHOEF83FAJOQ871F Pauline Salmon San Diego, CA
Hello, EJ, I have a couple of quick throughts. It certainly rains more in Ireland, and it has historically less sunny days than in NY. Then again, it could be a good excuse to emigrate. If you can't find your ancestor listed in a census at a sanitorium, or a death certificate, it would be difficult to track her stay there, as many of these places were private and no longer exist. Is there a repository in NYS, via the health department, for these records? Possible, but I am unaware of any. If she survived TB and was found living outside of NYC, that might be a lead as to where she was treated. Have you checked the NYT online or http://fultonhistory.com/? Hi Clare, I don't have the book you were looking for but on Ancestry I found the following which may be some new information regarding your family. 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Morris Higgins, age 40, birth about 1820 in Ireland. 1860 residence Ward 1, Hudson, NY, Columbia County, dated June 15, 1860. There is no house # or street name listed on the census, but living with Morris were: Catharine Higgins, age 40 Morris Higgins, age 20 John Higgins, age 16 Crneilus (probably Cornelius) Higgins, age 13 Michael Higgins, age 4 Morris Sr. was a laborer and son Morris Jr. was a moulder. I could not locate this family again in the 1870 Census, the only person I did find was Cornelius Higgins now living in Ward 4, Albany, NY (again no actual house number or street). I am guessing this is the same Cornelius from the 1860 Census and in 1870 may have married. It appears this Cornelius is either living at a hotel, or with the hotel owner's family. Maybe it will mean something to you (or not) Felix McCann, age 48, hotel keeper Burdsalia McCann, age 26 Cornelius McCann, age 17, hotel clerk Kate McCann, age 16 Felix McCann, age 13 Maria McCann, age 10 Joseph McCann, age 9 Hattie McCann, age 6 Frank McCann, age 4 Kittie McCann, age 3 George McCann, age 2 Edward McCann, age 1 Kittie Dyer, age 16, cook Bridget Higgins, age 24, domestic Cornelius Higgins, age 24, boatman Wherever these folks were living it was probably close to the waterfront as there were several other "boatmen" listed in nearby residences as well. Hopefully the above will be of some help to you. There was a large TB Hospital - Complex on Staten Island until about the 1960's. Seaview Hospital - today it is a Nursing Home. They have a TB museum and display with many books of the inmates names.
Another TB Hospital was in Rochester. It was known as the Iola Sanitarium. The City of Rochester or Monroe County Health Departments may know where their records are located. I think the city has a website. You should be able to link to it from the Monroe County GenWeb page. -----Original Message----- From: ny-irish-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ny-irish-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Kay Brearton Sent: Sunday, October 04, 2009 8:00 AM To: ny-irish@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium Many TB patients went to the Saranac Lake area in new York State in hopes of curing their illness. I have just posted online an index for the Tipperary Town district for the last two months of 1851. You can find a link to it on the Tipperary section of my website. I ordered the film from the Family History Library when they were first released and I received it last week. This film has the last two months of 1851 and the full year of 1852 for Tipperary plus Bansha records for 1912-21. My index gives the following information: date, complainant, complainant's residence, defendant, defendant's residence, witnesses and sometimes their residence. I did not transcribe the rest of the record which shows the crime/offense and the disposition of the case with dates. Please read my transcription notes to see what problems I encountered. After completing 1851, I will create indexes for 1852 and get them online a couple of months at a time because the files are too large to put the whole year in one table. On the webpage, I have listed all the areas available from the FHL films, with dates for County Tipperary. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
