This is for Melanie. You just never know what will be in probate. Some cases aren't as simple as you would expect, due to debts, or arrangements for surviving minor children, or other factors. If you know the date of death, and you can locate a volunteer in that area, it seems to me it would be worth having somebody check. Virginia
I found probate records for my great-great grandfather, an Irish immigrant who died in 1861. He did not own property but the papers named his wife and all of his children and where they were living. One of his sons, who was a minor at the time of his father's death, was living with a family in another county and working as a farm hand. Probate records can be a treasure trove of information.
If a typically poor Irish immigrant died in Manhattan in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, would there likely have been probate records? This is something I've never explored but I figured that since they didn't own property, there would not have been a will or other records. Melanie Orlando FL
I'd just like to add a couple of comments to Bob's, for anyone who may still be rather new at genealogy, or who might not have done much research in New York State. In general, don't ask if there's a will, ask if there are probate records! Many people never wrote wills, but there are good records of next of kin if there were probate records, and often other interesting bits of information. In all the NY locales I've dealt with, probate records are retained by the Surrogate's Court in the county seat. Warning, though: this can be very, very expensive if you cannot go there in person! Try finding a local volunteer through the RAOGK site. Virginia Humphrey, upstate NY

I have just added Jan 1, 1852 to Mar 11, 1852, petty court sessions index to the Tipperary section of my website. The indexes now go from the Nov 2, 1851. The film description stated that the records on the film I ordered went from 1851 to July 1852. I expected to get a year and half of records but instead the film only contained 4 months. I was disappointed but I did order the next film and it will be a surprise what dates are on it, since the description says it goes from July 1852 to August ? (no year given, just the question mark). Most of the films are for 2-3 years, so hopefully this will be also. I am wondering if these indexes are worthwhile in your family history quest. If you have an opinion, one way or another, please write me off the list. I will be searching the films for Tipperary Town till 1870 and was wondering if the info is helpful for others. I didn't add the offense or disposition because I felt the info, while it might add to your family history, it probably should be private. However, while there were some offenses for drunkenness, most were for stealing food, like potatoes and geese. The offenses for the Workhouse (Tipperary PLU) were mostly for stealing clothes or abandoning their children there. It was a sad time and people stole to keep their families alive and left their children at the workhouse so they could be fed and clothed and had a roof over their heads. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Anne, Libraries generally have directories for their cities or towns. Some of the bigger libraries have directories for more than one town or city. If you have a historical library in your area they might have a greater number of directories. If you live in another state I doubt that your library will have copies. Some directories contain more than just the address, one of which is, if, for example in 1930 he lived at 2 xyz street and in 1931 he moved to another town, it was usually noted, removed to that town or just moved. Also, if remarried his children might have continued to live at that address after he passed away. Check for a copy of his will, it is public information, from the Poughkeepsie city hall. Poughkeepsie has a very informative site that is worth looking at. Look at these sites. http://www.cityofpoughkeepsie.com/ http://www.poklib.org/ Also, go to Yahoo and find their newspaper. Let me know how you make out. Bob

Many thanks to Margaret Malloy, Judy Christopher and Birthsmile for all your help with my question about Moira. I've just sent an email to the Franklin County Historical Society and will write to the other places. Thanks again. I was in Malone several years ago with time to kill so even though I didn't have a known connection to Franklin County, I stopped in and looked into my Ryans who came to NY and PA through Canada. They were very helpful and I did find some interesting coincidences. http://www.franklinhistory.org/ Margaret On Oct 12, 2009, at 3:01 AM, ny-irish-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Message: 5 > Date: Sun, 11 Oct 2009 21:56:36 -0400 > From: "Clare Higgins" <clarehiggins@comcast.net> > Subject: [NY-IRISH] Moira > To: <ny-irish@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <0049A761B745415DBB2CDC422010BCE3@HIGGINS> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > Has anyone here ever traveled to Moira, Franklin County, NY? Again thank you for your input. I appreciate it! The only way to get to Moira is by car. It is a very small town with a store, Motel, hotel, post office and a restaurant/bar on Rte. 11 in Franklin county. At one time the GreyHound bus stopped at the Motel, but that was years ago. You have to take AmTrak to Plattsburg and then drive from there to Moria. Perhaps the Town Offices or the Franklin County Office could help you.
