    3. New York City vital records are kept separately from the rest of the state; NYC's are at the Municipal Archives in Manhattan (being indexed online at ItalianGen.org and GermanGenealogyGroup.com -- years vary by county, but there are at least some covering 1885 online). New York State (excluding NYC) vital records are kept at the NYS Department of Health -- see http://www.health.state.ny.us/ vital_records/ for information. Their yearly index is available at NARA NY, and possibly elsewhere. Neither of these sources keep Catholic records separately from any other religion / noon-religious service. For Catholic church records of the marriage, you need to know first in what parish the marriage took place -- and no, the Archdiocese does not have a central index. Your best bet is to start with the civil records. BTW, I have both Farrells and Carolans in my family, but on different lines, and not in NY. My Farrells are in Philadelphia and Co. Waterford, and my Carolans are in Philladelphia and Co. Tyrone. Still, it gave me a jolt to see both names in your post. 3. Hi Mary Ann, There won't be a birth record in Ireland, as birth registrations did not begin until 1864. You may find a church record of his baptism, but first you'd have to know what parish he was from - that, or search all Clare parishes that have records dating back far enough. You can see which parishes have records on the John Grenham / Irish Times website -- see http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/sitemap.htm for sitemap to navigate through, or just check Grenham's TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS (maybe at your local library). Generally speaking, you don't want to jump to Irish research until you've found a more specific origin, or have exhausted all possible sources in the US without luck. Hope that helps. He had 2 sons John & Thomas born in 1868 and 1871 before moving out to Iowa/Illinois. Are there birth/christening records available for those years - 1868-1871 - anywhere on-line? If not, is there any way to get those records? I'd like to find out his wife's name. Also, where would I find County Clare birth records...I know his parent's names and that he was born in Dec. 1841?? 2. According to Gannet newspapers, the Poughkeepsie Journal is the oldest newspaper in NY State, and the third oldest in the nation. Some of the bigger libraries have directories for more than one town or city. If you have a historical library in your area they might have a greater number of directories. If you live in another state I doubt that your library will have copies. Some directories contain more than just the address, one of which is, if, for example in 1930 he lived at 2 xyz street and in 1931 he moved to another town, it was usually noted, removed to that town or just moved. Also, if remarried his children might have continued to live at that address after he passed away. Check for a copy of his will, it is public information, from the Poughkeepsie city hall. Poughkeepsie has a very informative site that is worth looking at. Look at these sites. http://www.cityofpoughkeepsie.com/ http://www.poklib.org/ Also, go to Yahoo and find their newspaper. 3. Don't give up yet. If Social Services had him buried there has to be a copy of his death certificate. Cities and town have different systems of record keeping. In the town I frequent the most they mention, from 1900 forward, the informant and relation to, doctor and cause of death. This is not noted on a copy of a death certificate. If possible a view of the pages is a plus. A notice should have been put in the newspapers requesting information about the next of kin. A death notice must have been put in the paper and they had to hire a funeral parlor to prepare the internment. The funeral parlor had to know where to take the body. If you can locate the funeral parlor and (preferably) LOOK at their records you might find the grave location number. The same might hold true with the death certificate. I've tried , by mail & phone calls to Poughkeepsie, to contact funeral homes but I never was successful. Again, I would trust the Poughkeepsie Library to look for anything in the newspaper for help, especially the newspaper. Keep in touch. 3. Bob, Thanks for the info. My father was an alcoholic, and the death certificate states that Social Services brought him to the hospital. I checked with the town and they said because it happened almost 30 years ago there were no records! My father is buried at the Union Cemetery in Hyde Park in an unmarked grave. I have called and written to the Cemetery to find a location or plot # so that the grave could be marked - but I have had no response at all.
