Anna, I searched under my Norton Search (I have Noton Anti Virus & it's part of my toolbar.) I came up to a page from Wikipedia..tried to send the page but lost everything. So try "White Hands Gang" under google or wikipedia. They had an article plus a list of other readings available. Sorry I couldn't send it. If you can't get it let me know & I'll try again another way. Many times people want to obtain Civil War records. The repository for these records was centralized to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Their homepage includes information for the following mililtary records: American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War Spanish American War , Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion , World War I, World War II, Korean War , Vietnam War SEE: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/ You may want to see this URL for an alphabetical listing of its publications: SEE: http://www.archives.gov/publications/lists/list-all.html These are the regional facility locations of NARA, and, as Pat mentioned on the NY-IRISH Rootsweb list, each facility has different records: Anchorage, AK, Atlanta, GA , Boston, MA , Chicago, IL , Denver, CO .Fort Worth, TX , Kansas City, MO, Laguna Niguel, CA , New York City , Philadelphia, PA, Pittsfield, MA, San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA , Washington, D.C. Check out the NARA site for their holdings by office locations. Each one has different holdings. Most have the USA censuses, passenger lists from the area where the office is located plus much more. If you can find him in the 1860 USA federal census and he is still living with his parents, you will get their names in the census. Following the censuses when you get to the 1900 census, you could find out what year they all emigrated. The Federal censuses are on the zero years, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 etc. The 1890 census was lost in a fire. If the family stayed in NYS, the state had censuses on the years that ended in 5s. However, they too had a fire in Albany that destroyed many of the censuses so it depends on the county on whether the census is available because many made copies before sending theirs to Albany. Usually, birth, marriage and death certificates give you where they were born. However, many just say 'Ireland' and not the county, let alone the townland. But, using the censuses, you can figure out when and where they married and died. Once you have that information, you can get the certificates through the city clerks office if still in NY or through Albany but I find it quicker through the local offices. This is very general information but if you get an area, post to the list again and maybe we can give you very specific sources. > What can I get at NARA please? > > > > I know my grtgrandfather came from IRE to NYC..and stayed in Manhattan, > worked > > and married, had a family. Hi Maureen, Do you have the death cert for your great gpa? That most likely will give you his parent's names. That is how I found out my great gma's parents names of DUFFY. I have KELLY's on both sides of my tree & also MORAN's on both sides. I am still (since 1995) looking for the death record/time/place of my great gpa, Owen MORAN. I have him coming back from a trip to Ireland thru Ellis Is, even tho he was a US Citizen & because of this should not have come thru Ellis, but manifest says he was senile. That was May 1911 & 3 days later he was in Hudson Co Court of Common Pleas saying his "papers were burnt by fire". So he didn't have his papers, so another reason to come thru Ellis. That is the last I have of him. My other greats were John KELLY & Kate BANNON..they came from Trim, Meath in 1873. From his civil marriage registration I got his father's name, Arthur KELLY. I have his Mom as Alice, last name unkn. But I don't know where he was born. I have found an Arthur & Alice in the Drogheda area of Meath & Louth, but just don't know. I would say go thru all the baptisms & births & deaths here in US to see if you can find it. Do you know his siblings names? Look for their death certs & maybe you'll hit paydirt! I don't know any of John's siblings. Good Luck. I have set up a new web page for the 1865 NYS census index where you can link to the various wards. There is a link to in on the Troy section of my website. I have the wards combined by alpha and am starting to get the index online by surnames. So far they are online for A to beginning of C and all the Ws. Please read the bottom of the page. I gave instructions on how to link to the the census page images on the FamilySearch (Family History Library) website. Once you find your name in the index, it is a fairly easy process to find the image where the page of the census is located. If you have any problems, email me off the list and I'll try to help you find the exact image. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Today, the 10th and final ward of the 1865 NYS census for Troy went on line, on the Troy section of my website. This is a very big ward with two districts divided Middleburgh Street. The ward contained 4,621 individuals living in 612 dwellings and 976 families. Special thanks go to the transcribers of this ward who gave up their time to help others: Sharon Kink, Terry Bora, Amy LaPietra, Bob McConihe and Earl Smith. The total census is now online by wards. Over the next week or so, I shall get a main index online for the total census for easy searching, much like what is online for 1875 and 1880 censuses. FYI, this census had a total of 34,934 individuals listed and living in 4,587 dwellings and 11,401 families. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
