I have added another three months of Tipperary Town Petty Court Session records to those I already have online. While that is not a long time, there were over 500 entries in the time period (July, Aug & Sept 1852). Some, of course, like today were held over and so you will find them repeated a number of times, especially those cases against the Waterford & Limerick Railway Company who tended to abuse/use the property of the residents. Again, these are only indexes with names and residents of both the complainants and defendants. There is much more to each entry, such as the offense and the resolution of the case. Many are for stealing potatoes, livestock and clothes. Others for being drunk and/or fighting. Some are for letting their livestock and dogs roam the roads and property of others and not penned in. The dispositions/sentences are also interesting. Of this group, I found probably the most emotional for me were the number of people who were jailed for not having a place to live. Given it was 1852, in the middle of The Famine, these were not rare cases. If you find a name of interest, please get the film and read the rest of the entry. Besides good information about where they lived, witnesses are often related and can added to your family history. So far, I have transcribed the last two months of 1851 and the 3/4s of 1852. It takes me a good 12-14 hours to transcribe a half of year, so this will be a long project, since I interested in the Tipperary Town records till 1862 when my family emigrated to Troy, NY. Another point, while the court is in the Tipperary Town area and covers all the civil parishes in the area, there are also some cases for people in County Limerick. Also, since the records give the place of residency, you get almost as much genealogical information from them as in the Griffith's Valuation and/or Tithe Applotments. Plus, if there were other family members involved, you might just get more information. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Annie, if you put in 135th Street and Broadway, NY, NY on Google Maps, then click on satellite it will bring a picture up of the corner with some names of businesses in the buildings, there are numbers listed which I believe mean that it 3336 block of Broadway and 600 block of 135th St. I do not live in the city so this is just a guess. I do know for certain that her grandmother is always listed as "adopted" in the census records. Therefore, it seems highly likely that her true mother was born in Canada. My belief is that her mother was a niece of the couple, as her adopted father had a brother who came down through Canada to NY about this time, and had 3 daughters aged abt 15-19 when Ellen was born. For years I have searched for my mother's half-sisters. amazingly they turned up through my family history work --- both of us looking for one person, they were searching for their father, my grandfather! I understand personally about adoption, we adopted a teenager. She knew her parents the day she left them and came here and I have supported her wishes over the years as to contact. She has recently reunited with part of the family with our blessings. We didn't get the ABC TV show here, I looked for it. Adoption stories always tug at my heartstrings! Att: Pat Connors Great story, Pat. It must have been quite a kick to find your kinfolk living right next door after all these years of squinting at censuses hither and yon. Congratulations on your persistence. Jack Langton
Most probably have already realized this but since FamilySearch has put the censuses online for NYS censuses of 1865 and 1905, I have started to going over them. While years ago, I first looked at the censuses in the Troy Library and at my local Family History Center, I had just looked and took notes for my four main Troy surnames (Campbell, Flynn, McEntee and Connors/O'Connor). However, as the years went by, and I found more and more information, I have added more names to my tree as I went backward from the original four (Flanagan, Gilhooley, Fox, Todd, etc). While I found these names in Ireland, I forgot about rechecking the Troy censuses for them. While working on the transcription project of the 1865 NYS census for Troy, I came across Flanagans living right next door to my O'Connor family and since I had found that my gggrandmother was a Flanagan before marriage, this now became an important find. Yesterday I started looking at the 1915 NYS census for Troy and started with the 6th & 12th wards since my Connors/Campbell family lived in both of them. Right away I found my ggrandfather and my grandfather's brother in the 6th living on Burden. I had missed it before (handwriting and wrong spelling of last name) and had assumed he died and spent many years looking for his death certificate. Long story. Anyhow, I just thought I would share my experience and stress that going back over these censuses after not seeing them for ten or more years, you too might find things you didn't find the first time. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
