    1. [NY-IRISH] Catholic Church on or near East 58th street Manhattan
    2. Ann & George Ryan
    3. Hi. An ancestor of my wife died at his home at 344 East 58th Street, Manhattan, on August 7th 1911. His name was Patrick Goodman, and I'm hoping to find out where his funeral mass might have taken place. From his address would anyone know the parish/church that he would most likely have been attached to? Thanks, George Ryan

    3. Thank you, Pat, for the great link. I have been at a loss as to where to look next. I have a great grandfather James J. Phelan who married Ellen Morrissey and I can't find record of them other than the 1910 census. Then they lived in Massachusetts where my family is now from. Something happened and my grandmother ended up in an orphanage so we don't know much. From what she said I she thought they had come to Massachusetts from New York and her birth record says both were from Waterford County. The 1910 census says they had been married for 8 years, or 1902, which seems about right as my grandmother was born 1903 (it also said she was 5 and she was 7 so usual variances in census info). I looked on the New York German site and they do have an Ellen Morrissey marrying a James J. Lenihan in 1899- possible misspelling I guess. It may be them but, unfortunately, I can't use it until I have searched and found no other record for them. With the link you provided I can now start to search the individual churches and see what I find. Do you have any other suggestions for me? I don't know their parents names at this point. Just that they were from Waterford. Thank you, Janet ________________________________ From: Pat Connors <nymets22@gmail.com> To: ny-irish@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, December 18, 2009 4:20:57 PM Subject: Re: [NY-IRISH] Starting point I put this online a few years back: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nynewyo2/RCchurchregisters.htm It shows what records are available per church plus the church's address. 1. [NY-IRISH] Starting point
    2. My grandfather Edward F Sullivan was born in New York in 1870. All the birth certs of his children either state US or New York as his birthplace. His marriage and death certs state New York. Since marriage, he lived in Manhattan and Queens Counties. He does not appear in any NYC birth indexs. Eventually, I will attempt to locate baptismal records one church at a time. Any suggestions as to which Roman Catholic Church to start my quest? The oldest source I have is his marriage certificate. St. Vincent De Paul 116 West 24th St. 8 August, 1894. Thank you, Robert T. Sullivan

    3. The database at Germangenealogygoup.com is good, but not complete and not completely accurate, either.  I've found some relatives there, some are not there, some are spelled way wrong, etc.  It's still extremely helpful! Anna Caulfield

    3. Hi Anna; Thank you for your search and suggestion. I followed the link and found the record you refer to. It looks like a good site. I agree that the birth year may be off but it's the only record I have of them in the United States as he arrived about 1901 and apparently died before the 1920 census. I figure if he was born early in the year and it's a bit off he could have been about 18 or so. Do you happen to know how complete their database is? I am also looking for a marriage for James Phelan and Ellen Morrissey prior to the birth of their daughter in 1903 in Massachusetts. If they were married in New York would that database have it? I ask because I found one for an Ellen Morrissey and James J Lenihan but no other. Lenihan seems a bit of a stretch from Phelan but I did not find any other record. !!! I hope you find family as I did using the Library. 3. Hi Judy; I just checked the Waterford County Library. It looks to me like the searching available references a microfilm and then you must go there to search it. I live in the US so that is not possible. Is there some online searchable database that I missed? 3. Please remember to cut/delete repeated messages which you are replying to. I have the list programed to not let overly long posts go to the list, without my approval. I let the last three go through and I really shouldn't have done so. I should have sent them back to the senders and requested that they delete much of the repeated messages. I apologize to those receiving the digest. So, in the future, when a message is very long and get bumped to me for approval, I will probably refuse to allow it to go to the list. Instead, I will send a reject email to sender and request that they cut much of the repeated messages. I don't know what mail program you use, but many have a setting where you can select not to automatically repeat messages. I use that with my pacbell account and that way if I want to remind the reader about the message I am replying to, I just copy and paste the part of the message that pertains to my message. With my gmail account, the message I am replying to is automatically repeated so, I just delete most of it and keep the part that I am replying to. Thanks to all for your help in this and your cooperation. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. The town of Saranac Lake, NY became a TB treatment center, based on the work of Dr.Trudeau (the institute still carries on immune system research). My grandmother & grandfather met there - they were staying at different "cure cottages." Mail from NYC arrived twice daily. There is a lovely book called "Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake." The library here sill has recirds from the old Trudeau Clinic, and I found records of my grandmother & aunt early 1900's). --- On Wed, 12/9/09, Joy Bugos <joybugos@yahoo.com> wrote: > From: Joy Bugos <joybugos@yahoo.com> > Subject: Re: [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium > To: ny-irish@rootsweb.com > Date: Wednesday, December 9, 2009, 11:52 AM > > > > > > ________________________________ > From: Kay Brearton <Kbrearton@nycap.rr.com> > To: ny-irish@rootsweb.com > Sent: Sun, October 4, 2009 11:00:05 AM > Subject: Re: [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium > > I have a relative who died of TB at home. 1. Re: [NY-IRISH] Question about TB sanatorium
    2. Maryann C. Arnold
    3. >From everything I have read, if your grandmother had TB when leaving Ireland (a) she probably would not have been allowed on the ship to start with and (b) if she had it when entering NY (exhibiting symptoms) she would have been immediately quarantined and transferred from Ellis Island to one of the other island hospitals so she did not infect others. TB was highly contagious, especially back then and with the close quarters onboard. She would have been held in quarantine until she was well, died or was deported back to Ireland. Many ship passengers contracted serious illnesses while on shipboard, but since the trip from Ireland to NY took about 7 to 10 days (depending on stops) in the 1890s, if she contracted the illness onboard ship she probably would not have been sick enough upon entry into NY to be showing symptoms and quarantined. 2. FYI, this book is out of print, for anyone interested in purchasing it. Additionally, Mr. Joseph SILINONTE, renowned NYC area genealogist, is deceased for about four years. He had his own website, where his books could be ordered, and now that web address is up for sale. Kind of a sad ending to a man who had such passion for his city and its people.
